Razorcake interview Greg Soden and Keith Gough about ‘Unscripted Moments: Conversations with Propagandhi’

Unscripted Moments is a podcast dedicated to all things Propagandhi. It originally started as a song-by-song analysis by Greg Soden and Keith Gough. (Keith has since left the podcast and Steve Foster replaced him.) Since the podcast began in 2020, it has had interviews with fans, academics, musicians, and the band. The last one is what comprises this book. (Full disclosure: Propagandhi is one of my favourite bands, I’ve been on the podcast twice, and I interviewed Keith and Greg for Razorcake’s website.)

The interviews in Unscripted Moments are taken from the podcast. All the band members have multiple interviews. This includes not only current players, but also former ones: John Samson Fellows and David “Beaver” Guillas. The interviews complement the analysis of specific songs. Bassist Todd Kowalski reflects on “F**k the Border,” and guitarist Sulyn Hago talks about their initial excitement of “The Only Good Fascist Is a Very Dead Fascist.” The interviews go in-depth and cover many nuances of the band’s catalogue.

One of my favourite interviews was Greg and Keith speaking with Todd and his brother, Kent, about Propagandhi. It was a special thing to read the older brother, Kent, a university professor, talk about what his brother’s music meant to him. It’s not often that we get insight into what the families of musicians think of them.

Beyond the interviews, there are colour photos of the band from the ’90s to the present. After each interview, there are QR codes to audio of the original interview and websites or interviews related to the content discussed. As a bonus, if you order the book directly through the publisher, it comes with a two-CD compilation of Propagandhi covers by fans of the podcast.

If there are any downsides to the book, it’s the editing. As someone with a copy editing background, there are things I’m particular about that occurred here (spacing, proper use of quotation marks, italics, and so on). This doesn’t take away from the overall enjoyment of Unscripted Moments, but if you’re a stickler for proper style, there are some issues here and there. The other downside is that since Greg transcribed the interviews almost verbatim from the podcast, the text doesn’t always flow smoothly, as people may use “like” or “yeah” excessively. However, the flip side of that is if Greg had done edits to make it read easier, he would’ve had to make changes that the listener would notice if they compared it to the podcast. It’s a difficult decision, but one that may affect some readers.

These are minor points. Overall, if the Canadian four-piece falls in your top ten favourite bands, you owe it to yourself to pick this up. Greg and his co-hosts have created something special with the podcast and now with the book of the same name. It’s essential reading for fans of one of the most politically and socially conscious acts of our time. ¬

Off-the-beaten path experiences, great music and crazy shenanigans

Thoughts Words Action review ‘Old Tricks, New Treats’ By Ruby Dee Philippa

Ruby Dee Philippa’s Old Tricks, New Treats, the third instalment in the Bag Of Tricks trilogy, is a high-octane collection of short stories that transports readers headfirst into the chaotic, drug-fuelled ecosystem of early 1980s San Francisco punk rock. Like previous volumes, this book promises a deep dive into the culture, complete with all its euphoria, destruction, and eventual paths toward survival. Like before, this book also follows the exploits of a sprawling, memorable cast, a rag-tag gang including members of the band The Sh*ts, Val, Sophie, Babs, Carla, Red, Marco, and Bags. The story centres on their adventures as they roam the volatile terrain of youth on the fringe, making mostly bad and occasionally good choices while aiming toward lives entirely of their own making, however uncharted they might be. The stories chronicle the highs and lows that define a subculture built on discordance and rebellion.

For those whose familiarity with the late 70s and early 80s punk scene is limited to black-and-white photos or polished documentaries, Philippa offers a necessary corrective. She pulls back the curtain on the romance, revealing the stark realities that underpinned the aesthetic. As she notes, while the punk world offered off-the-beaten path experiences and great music and all sorts of crazy shenanigans, it also housed profound darkness. Many of the punk rockers she knew were estranged from their biological families, often lived on the streets, and relied heavily on drinking and drugging as part of their daily existence. This commitment to stark realism is perhaps the most defining and powerful aspect of Philippa’s authorial voice. Her goal, articulated with clear intent, is to bring this part of my history, and that of many others, to light. She is deliberate in warning readers that certain passages may be disturbing due to the stark descriptions of drug use, emphasizing that she wrote it exactly like she remembered it and didn’t pull any punches. This honest stance becomes an essential piece of cultural documentation. Philippa and her former cohorts agree on a need for these stories to be told, suggesting this work is not an exercise in nostalgia, but a necessary historical record, capturing the full spectrum of a life that was brutally destructive, but also entirely free.

The unique perspective, an analytical mind filtered through raw street experience, is what gives her writing its distinctive weight. The woman who co-founded North Coast California Earth First! in Arcata, fished Alaskan waters, and then went on to become a successful restaurateur and a thrice Grammy-considered singer/songwriter with Ruby Dee and the Snakehandlers, is not an observer looking in. She is a survivor looking back. The transition from engineering student to punk rocker to roots-rockabilly musician lends a powerful authenticity to her recounting of these lost years, which she revisited for this work after reconnecting with old friends. She wrote the book based on real events, only taking liberties and changing some details because she could, a prerogative of the survivor shaping the historical record. Old Tricks, New Treats is not a comfortable read, nor is it intended to be. It is a vital compilation that captures the beautiful, desperate energy of a seminal youth movement. By refusing to shy away from the hard edges, the estrangement, the street living, and the heavy drug use, Ruby Dee Philippa makes sure that the legacy of this punk generation is remembered in full, complex color. This trilogy is an important achievement, offering an exciting story and a necessary cultural artifact for anyone seeking the real truth behind the safety pin and the leather jacket. An essential read for any true punk rocker interested in the eighties San Francisco punk rock scene.

The Preston punk and post-punk scenes…

From seeing Joy Division headline Warehouse to loving The Fall at Preston Poly, music memories of growing up amid 70s and 80s Preston

A new book recalls life in the city’s music scene through the 70s and 80s as Paddy grew up in Fulwood

It took me decades to realise how lucky I was to spend my teenage years in Preston – and now I’ve written a book about them.

Not JUST About The Fall: 50 adventures in a post-punk paradise is a love letter to the forgotten heroes of the music industry – the fans – and a local scene which included classic gigs in venues such as The Warehouse, the old Preston Polytechnic Students’ Union and Preston Guild Hall.

I became a teenager in 1977, and used to feel I had been two or three years too young to be able to fully embrace punk rock – but I was so lucky to have a brother, Guy, who was (and still is!) almost two-and-a-half years older than me, and who brought the thrilling sounds of the S*x Pistols, The Clash, Buzzcocks, the Ramones and so many others into our home in Fulwood.

Then, one night in August, 1979, John Peel changed my life when he played Rowche Rumble by The Fall – the group’s third single. I was in love. The Fall’s second LP, Dragnet, soon followed, and then I got the chance to see them for the first time, at Preston Poly, on November 12, 1979.

Even better, me and Guy were put on the guest list because they were being supported by The Voice Of, a group which included two of our then near-neighbours, Steve Bennett and Jon Hibbert (future Hacienda DJ Jon Dasilva). But I’m still kicking myself for missing the gig The Fall played down the road at The Warehouse just 10 days later.

It wasn’t JUST about The Fall, though – there were so many other great groups and gigs to enjoy during my teenage years. When I was still only 14, in 1978, I was so lucky to be able to see The Clash with Su***de at Blackburn King George’s Hall, and Ian Dury and the Blockheads with Matumbi and Whirlwind, and Elvis Costello and the Attractions with Richard Hell and the Voidoids and John Cooper Clarke at Preston Guild Hall.

Later, I would see The Cure at Preston Poly and Lancaster University, The Chords at Preston Poly, The Jam in Blackburn and Buzzcocks in Blackburn – twice, the second time with Joy Division, who I later saw headlining at The Warehouse in Preston. Then there was U2 with Altered Images at Manchester Poly – well, it was only £1.20! – and, of course, there were more gigs by The Fall, in Chorley, Bolton and Blackpool.

I felt enormous local pride in premier Preston post-punk band Blank Students, who had two tracks on the first of the three Earcom compilations released by the pioneering Edinburgh-based label Fast Product in 1979, before releasing their own single in 1980 and landing a John Peel session in 1981. This was all a very big deal, and they were from PRESTON – yeah! I loved the band, and saw them several times – including at Preston Poly, The New Brunswick and Gaiety pubs and in Avenham Park.

I also looked up to Andrew Hobbs, a real mover and shaker on the Preston punk and post-punk scenes. He produced his own fanzine (Here Come the Martian Martians), his own cassette compilations (A Classic Slice of Teenage Angst, Volumes One and Two) and wrote for Zigzag magazine. I didn’t know him then, but we became great friends from 1984 when we both attended the same journalism college in Sheffield.

There was a thriving independent cassette scene in the early 1980s and, as part of this, I made a terrible racket in one of the worst bedroom bands of all time. We called ourselves The Ambitious Merchants and the tapes we released (the first, in a nod to The Fall, was called Eating Apple Crumble Whilst Listening to Rowche Rumble) even made it into the charts…the Obscurist Charts, which featured in the national music paper Sounds. I also launched my own cassette label, Apple Crumble Tapes, which released several cassettes – including a speech by the then Labour MP Tony Benn, which Sounds writer Dave McCullough gave a five-star review.

Heady and halcyon days – as The Undertones sang: “Teenage dreams, so hard to beat…”
