Wednesday 2nd July at 1pm on our channel
Indie Novella are proud to announce that we are launching a new essay anthology Bread Alone: what happens when we run out of working class writers? — and we will be running an Instagram Live on Wednesday 2nd July to introduce it and tell booksellers, partners and collborators more about it and why we’ve spent the last year working on such a project.
Brought together by award winning journalist Kate Pasola, this collection will feature 32 writers from working class backgrounds — novelists, poets, playwrights, journalists, screenwriters, songwriters and beyond — sharing deeply personal and powerful essays on writing, class, and creativity. Some are already published; others are emerging talents. All of them are voices we need to hear.
The anthology is a response to a growing crisis: working class writers are being pushed out of the industry. According to the ONS, the number of working class creatives has halved since 1970. 78% of working class writers say their background has held back their careers (The Bookseller). And 80% of UK journalists now come from privileged backgrounds. We believe that matters — not just for literature, but for culture and democracy.
We’re writing to you, our allies in publishing and bookselling, because we believe this project will resonate with your readers and communities. It’s a call not just to listen to these voices, but to ensure they’re part of our literary future.
Kate and I be talking more about the project in an Instagram Live conversation on Wednesday 2nd July at 1pm on our channel:
