Unexploded bombs weren’t exactly what we had in mind when setting out to ride the Ring of Wessex, but thankfully, we haven’t come across any mortars as we’ve crossed gravel roads of Salisbury Plain.

Along the way, we traced the Old Shaftesbury Drove, followed the ancient Fosse Way, and rode the Ridgeway, connecting these big-bike-friendly trails with some of the southwest’s most twisting and scenic tarmac. And while the Husqvarna Norden 901 Expedition and Royal Enfield Bear 650 couldn’t be more different on paper, both proved an absolute joy to ride.

Now that’s what I call helmet hair! Sensational roads, big bike friendly trails, scenic castles and bucolic scenes that could have been plucked from the pages of a Thomas Hardy novel what a day today has been.

It’s life-affirming stuff, made all the more enjoyable by riding two cracking but very different bikes, the Husqvarna Norden 901 Expedition and the Royal Enfield Bear 650.

Today we’re off to ride the Ring of Wessex for the next issue of Adventure Bike Rider magazine.

This incredible route combines sensational roads with a series of big-bike-friendly trails as the boys explored the ancient kingdom of Wessex, in southwest England. First up, was a ride along the ancient Fosse Way and we couldn’t resist making a splash in this water crossing the Husqvarna Norden 901 Expedition and the Royal Enfield Bear 650.

It was trickier than it looks, thanks to plenty of rocks being hidden under the surface. Next stop, Bath, ironically, to dry off.

What if your next European adventure began not with a long slog to the port, but with your first twist of the throttle on a mountain pass?

I’d wager that most of our tours to Europe start off the same way. A late night or early morning blast down to the port, a ferry journey that sometimes feels more like you’re on a landing craft, and then rolling onto continental soil for a day or two of riding just to reach your destination.

Sometimes, this is part of the fun, especially if you’re on a big GS or Tiger with a massive fuel tank. But the novelty can wear off, and it’s fair to say that travelling to and from where you really want to be riding is the least enjoyable part of the journey. Especially when you’re on the way home and know you have to be back at work on Monday, with a 2,000-mile journey ahead of you.

That’s why using a motorcycle shipping company like Moving Motorcycles is a good idea. Having your bike shipped directly to your destination means that you can just fly in, collect your bike, and be ready to explore. Intrigued to find out more about how this works? It was Kevin Gallas’ first time at the ABR Festival, and he certainly made an entrance at the GoPro Display Arena.

We recently rode across the UK on a cracking two-day Coast to Coast adventure from Askam-in-Furness all the way to the stunning Holy Island in Northumberland. On the way, we explored some of the highest paved roads and some of the best green lanes in the UK, equipped with Dunlop Trailmax Raids on the Ténéré and Dunlop Mutants on the Tracer 9 GT.

Nothing beats riding off the beaten track, no traffic, no distractions, just the sound of the engine and the open trail ahead. But what happens when something goes wrong? A breakdown miles from anywhere, or worse still, you lose your bearings and your satnav decides it’s had enough too.

Well, we might have just found a solution, REALRIDER has teamed up with Anywhere eSIM. This eSIM runs in the background on your phone, switching between networks to ensure your phone always has the best possible connection, even when your usual provider is unavailable. So even if your preferred mobile network disconnects, you will still be able to send out an SOS in case of emergencies.

Which is best: the Yamaha Ténéré 700 or the Yamaha Tracer 9 GT? The adventure bike versus a sports touring motorcycle.

To find out, we put these bikes through their paces on an epic Coast to Coast adventure, where we took the Tracer across stunning paved roads, while the Tenere explored byways and some of the UK’s best green lanes. Along the way , we also:
- Ride on the beach next to the Irish Sea
- Explore the highest roads in England, including Harthope Moss and Grasshill
Causeway
- Discover incredible green lanes and gravel roads that stretch for miles across
remote country, like the Old Coach Road
- Follow the path of Hadrian’s Wall on a little-known track
- Ride the best biking roads in the Lake District, North Pennines, and
Northumberland
- Cross the causeway at the Holy Island of Lindisfarne before it is flooded by the
North Sea

But which bike was best? Did the Yamaha Tenere 700’s off-road prowess outperform the Tracer 9 GT’s long-distance touring credentials? Click the link below to find out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXl8Koc0h-o&t=36s

There’s nothing quite like blue skies above, the hum of the engine beneath you, and miles of trail stretching into the distance.

Seems like as good of a day as ever to take on some of the north of England’s section of the Trans Euro Trail, on the Yamaha Ténéré 700 Explore.
