As a Plymouth based business that relies in a healthy and sustainable environment it can sometimes feel a bit disheartening when you hear all the bad news about climate change. So why have I posted a photo of some bins?

Plymouth has one of the best scenic maritime views of any UK city and we also have some pretty good weather. That desirable combination encourages the average Janner (local) and tourist alike to consume vast quantities of ice cream made locally from from Devonian (and Cornish) milk and cream. Up to now the ice cream vans would park up and on a hot day would use their polluting diesel engines to power the compressor that keeps the freezers working. So a bit of a doom cycle as the more diesel pollution and harmful particulates emitted makes Plymouth a less attractive place to visit and live in. Remember that on a sunny day the freezers will be working 12 hours a day 7 days a week and that is a lot of pollution.

Anyway back to the photo. On the left of the bins is s silver box that houses a plug in power supply of a size suitable to power a commercial freezer. The little black line running to the kerb is a trench with rubber edges to safely secrete a sturdy power cable and avoid a trip hazard.

So well done to Plymouth City Council for taking the environment seriously and doing something to help make Plymouth an even better place to live and visit. Joshua McCarty

The chicks died after a male bird left their nest near Peebles in the Borders and two females struggled to feed them.

I remember day 1 very well. A challenging site to do with the technology available 25 years ago. Always very proud of the achievements of the SSC that we helped them with.

The saga of polygamy at nest 2 continues with fascinating behaviour.
There are now 4 eggs laid, both females alternate the incubation with Mrs O doing more of the share.
3 eggs laid - 18th, 21st and 24th are Mrs O's.
The fourth egg was also laid on 24th April by the second female.
Both females seem amicable and tolerant. Male is providing small fish. Interesting to see Mrs O took the fish and ate at the nest with the male and female2 present.

10 years ago on Skomer island playing with the puffins. Amazingly I still have the miniature socket set today. Purchased from Costco when I used to be a regular visitor ( and very much poorer for it). The camera is a Bosch MIC 400 from memory. Nice little units but it was a shame that to make them a success it took a multinational like Bosch to buy up Forward Vision a small innovative UK engineering company.

Back from a week of installing nest cameras and have to have all this and more with me to do my work. There is a saying that goes " better looking at it than for it" and that really rings true when you are working on a remote site and the valiant arborists is at the top of a tree or pole in sub zero windchill and you need to replace a connector or cable that has been damaged by winter storms or inquisitive Squirrels. We have worked in remote forests and islands for over 25 years now and have fine tuned our load out and kit list to cover most eventualities. The true essential is the Goretex onesie though, keeps me warm and dry and tick free.
