As a Plymouth based business that relies in a healthy and sustainable environment it can sometimes feel a bit disheartening when you hear all the bad news about climate change. So why have I posted a photo of some bins?
Plymouth has one of the best scenic maritime views of any UK city and we also have some pretty good weather. That desirable combination encourages the average Janner (local) and tourist alike to consume vast quantities of ice cream made locally from from Devonian (and Cornish) milk and cream. Up to now the ice cream vans would park up and on a hot day would use their polluting diesel engines to power the compressor that keeps the freezers working. So a bit of a doom cycle as the more diesel pollution and harmful particulates emitted makes Plymouth a less attractive place to visit and live in. Remember that on a sunny day the freezers will be working 12 hours a day 7 days a week and that is a lot of pollution.
Anyway back to the photo. On the left of the bins is s silver box that houses a plug in power supply of a size suitable to power a commercial freezer. The little black line running to the kerb is a trench with rubber edges to safely secrete a sturdy power cable and avoid a trip hazard.
So well done to Plymouth City Council for taking the environment seriously and doing something to help make Plymouth an even better place to live and visit. Joshua McCarty
