Happy Africa Day! 🌍🌍🌍
On May 25, 1963, the Organization of African Union (OAU) was formed. It was headed by Ethiopia’s Haile Selassie I, who invited the heads of the 32 independent African nations to convene at his country’s capital, Addis Ababa.🌍🇪🇹
Haile Selassie I was selected as the first president of the OAU, paving the way for African Unification.
The OAU is now known as the African Union (AU).
Ghana’s first President Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana also played prominent role in the OAU. 🇬🇭
Kwame Nkrumah, was a passionate believer in African unity, and a living link with the historic Pan-African movement which had promoted solidarity among people of African descent everywhere against colonialism and racism. ✊🏾🌍🇬🇭
“Today, we look to the future calmly, confidently, and courageously. We look to the vision of an Africa not merely free but united. In facing this new challenge, we can take comfort and encouragement from the lessons of the past. We know that there are differences among us. Africans enjoy different cultures, distinctive values, special attributes. But we also know that unity can be and has been attained among men of the most disparate origins,
that differences of race, of religion, of culture, of tradition, are no insuperable obstacle to the coming together of peoples. History teaches us that unity is strength, and cautions us to submerge and overcome our differences in the quest for common goals, to strive, with all our combined strength, for the path to true African brotherhood and unity.” ~ Emperor Haile Selassie I 🇪🇹👑🙏🏾
Africa Day was previously called African Liberation Day!!! 🌍✊🏾🔥
