New Gear Day!

I've been after Slate's VSX headphones for a long time after hearing everyone rave about them, and today is finally the day I get them! After months of them being unavailable, mine arrived today!🙌

I've been quiet for a while on here; distracted by all sorts going on in life, distracting me from what I love to do, but I'm constantly moving forward behind the scenes. I'll try to do that a bit more publicly from now on, but for now, I need to put the VSX to the test.🤘

After 18 months away from live music, I finally got back in action at over the weekend! It was truly incredible. Shoutout to and for being the best bands of the weekend and giving me back the feeling I've missed so much!

I've been quiet here for a while due to buying and setting up a new computer to keep up with my more intense projects, then investing in some new software, learning how to make the most of it, etc, but I'm back in action now, so expect to hear more real soon!

🎊NEW RELEASE DAY🎉

Today Crashbangpow release their debut original single, Lunar Dreams! This hard-working duo have been putting up fantastic cover songs on YouTube over the last year, taking pop and rock classics and adding heavy metal twists, but this release is their first original song. It's a fantastic song; a blend of trippy atmospheric psychedelics, sparing synths, melodic catchy vocal hooks, all laid on a thick metal foundation. It was an absolute dream to mix and master and I'm so stoked for it to be out in the wild for you all to hear!

I'm so excited to see Razor Attack release their single "Razor of Steel"! I had such a good time mixing and mastering this song; it's full of infectious leads, intense drumming, a chorus that just gets stuck in your head and a ripping solo that makes me realise I need to practice more myself! It's that time again, I have some free time coming up and some new plugins to play with so give me some music to work with! Happy New Year, everyone! We survived 2020!

Despite the chaos in the world, I had an incredible year, full of personal growth and wonderful developments. I'll be making some even bigger steps through 2021 so keep an eye open for some big surprises as the year goes!

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported me in any way over the last six months, and I can't wait to take it even further this year. You guys are all amazing. I wish you all the best this year; it can't get worse than 2020, right? Right?

So a week ago my good friend Curtis McMorran (under his Before Decay project) released a song that I mixed and mastered for him, and now I've created a Before and After video to compare the final version to the original demo he'd sent to me, to show how much of a difference I could make with my mixing and mastering process.

I've made huge strides recently, and I've got some major plans and investments lined up to keep the momentum rolling on! This next week is going to get seriously busy👌

Today I sent off my first finished, approved master for a client. First review is in the bag, setting the benchmark with 5/5! I'm awaiting feedback on a project for another client at the moment, so I hope I've nailed it with that one too as I wouldn't want to hurt my perfect rating now!

The single I shipped today should be released by the weekend, and I absolutely cannot wait to share it with you.

Life is good, my friends. Covid be damned. We can still get things done and have a good time.

New blog post day!

Had a little break between these while I've made some changes to my work flow and life situation, but I'm getting back to business now so I'm aiming to make the a weekly thing now.

In this one I explore the idea of a Final Mix, and the issue that creative types regularly encounter in which they can never reach that "final" version because there's always that one last improvement to make. Chasing perfection was an issue that held me back for so long, and this is just another prime example of that. I've managed to overcome it here too, and I'm able to draw that line and export and share a Final Mix, so I wanted to take some time to discuss the importance of that.👌

When is a final mix, a final mix? Anyone in a creative line of work or hobby will understand this question well. We'll spend hours working on a painting, graphic design, audio mix, whatever it may be, we'll finally finish it, hit export, then take a look or a listen...and instantly see something we....

The other day I posted about my love for Decapitator, but there's another saturation/distortion plugin that I love that's entirely free, and it doesn't get nearly enough love! As far as multi-band distortion goes, Fabfilter's Saturn 2 is king. Undisputed. However, Cubase has a free stock plugin called Quadrafuzz that can do a similar job and get some fantastic results.

There are so many applications for it, but my go-to is always on toms. It can add so much punch, impact and attack to toms that they instantly get way more present in the mix and jump out of the speakers. It can also work absolute magic on a snare drum, add just the right amount of attack and top-end sizzle.

We're always distracted by the expensive premium plugins, but never forget to give your stock plugins some love from time to time, you may be surprised by the results you get from them!

I've had a fantastic, productive day working on a project for a client! Got a few tweaks to make before it's finished but it's already sounding huge and I can't wait to be able to share it with you.
