Reference: Overnight works to London Road, Uppingham
Dear Occupier,
We are writing to provide advance notice of overnight works that will be carried out along part of London Road (Uppingham) between 28 September and 9 October 2026 (inclusive).
These works are taking place to resurface the road between Spring Back Way / South View and North Street West / North Street East. This follows the successful completion of similar resurfacing schemes along the A47 and is part of Rutland County Council’s wider capital investment programme to improve our highway network.
Temporary overnight closure of London Road is needed so that these works can be carried out as quickly and safely as possible – keeping disruption for residents, businesses and road users to a minimum. The road will be closed from 7.00pm until 5.00am each night (weeknights only).
Contractors will remove and re-lay the current road surface on both sides of the carriageway, add new anti-skid surface texturing and re-paint road markings. Due to the nature of these works and road layout, we are unable to provide safe vehicular access for properties located inside the temporary road closure. Vehicle access can only be maintained for emergency services.
During overnight working hours (7.00pm to 5.00am), vehicles will not be able to enter, leave, or travel through the closure area. Residents who need to use their vehicle overnight should park outside the closure before 7.00pm.
Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times, with contractors on-site throughout to provide assistance, if needed.
These works are being completed as quickly as possible, in two phases:
Phase 1: Monday 28 September to Friday 2 October
London Road between Spring Back Way / South View and High Street West / �High Street East.
Phase 2: Monday 5 October to 9 Friday October
London Road between High Street West / High Street East and North Street West / North Street East.
Because High Street West and High Street East operate as one-way streets, access arrangements will vary during the works:
From 7.00pm to 5.00am between 28 September and 2 October, there will be no vehicle access to High Street West or High Street East from London Road
Once Phase 1 is complete (from Monday 5 October), vehicle access to these streets will be available from the direction of Corby only, during overnight closures
Pedestrian access will remain available throughout
A fully signposted diversion route will be in place each night throughout the closure to direct traffic and heavy goods vehicles away from the works.

Will I have vehicle access to my property during the road closure period, if it is located on London Road, High Street West or High Street East?
Because of the road layout and nature of these works, we cannot allow vehicles to enter, leave or pass through the closure area unless they are blue light services responding to an emergency. While we always try our best to maintain vehicular access to homes and businesses located inside temporary road closures, it is not possible to do this safely on this occasion. If you live inside the affected area and need to use our vehicle between the hours of 7.00pm and 5.00am, we ask that you please park outside the road closure.
Will I still be able to access my property on foot if it is located inside the road closure?
Yes. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times while the road is closed. We will put barriers and signs in place each night, so it’s clear where pedestrians should walk and cross the road. We will also have contractors on-site throughout to ensure public safety.
When can I drive on the new surface?
The materials we use are laid at a high temperature and must be allowed to cool before being walked or driven on. We would expect that normal cars can travel on a new surface around one hour after it has been laid. This can increase in warm weather and will be longer for larger vehicles. Our contractors will remain onsite until it is possible to drive on the new surface.
Is the new surface safe to walk on?
Freshly laid material can hold a higher temperature for several hours after laying. Although it can be driven on, we recommend caution when walking on the material for at least 24 hours. The material can be slightly sticky for the first 24 hours and may leave a small residue on shoes. Please be careful when walking any animals as bare paws will be more susceptible to injury on hot surfaces.
Will my bins still be emptied?
These works are being carried out at night to ensure safety and minimise disruption for residents. We do not anticipate any disruption to bin collections so please present your bins as normal, on your usual collection day.
I have a business inside the works. Will clients, customers or deliveries still be�allowed access?
Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times. However, we can only allow access for emergency service vehicles during the road closure period. If possible, please arrange deliveries outside our working times. If this is not possible and you need to talk about a specific delivery, please call the council’s highways team on: 01572 758 297.
I have a carer or helper who visits me. Will they be allowed access?
Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times. Please inform any carer or helper of the works, so that they can allow a few extra minutes for any delays.
