What to Do on Your Allotment This Weekend

It’s the weekend before Christmas, and while winter is in full swing, your allotment still has plenty to offer! A few hours on the plot now can help you enjoy a festive harvest and even add a touch of homemade greenery to your decorations.

1. Gather Veg for Christmas Dinner

Your plot can help make the holiday table extra special! Dig up last‑minute vegetables such as parsnips, carrots, Brussels sprouts, leeks, and kale. A hand‑picked selection from your own allotment adds freshness and flavour that store-bought simply can’t match.

2. Harvest Herbs and Greens

Pick any remaining hardy herbs — rosemary, thyme, sage, and parsley are perfect for stuffing, roast vegetables, or Christmas sauces. Winter salads like mizuna or lamb’s lettuce can add a touch of green to festive meals.

3. Collect Natural Decorations

Add a seasonal touch to your home with natural decorations from your plot. Holly, ivy, pine branches, or even ornamental grasses can make beautiful wreaths, table arrangements, or mantel displays. Just be sure to only take what’s abundant and sustainable.

4. Protect and Prepare Your Plot for Winter

Check that tender plants are still covered with fleece or cloches, and tidy up supports, stakes, and water systems before the coldest weeks hit. A little care now will make the plot easier to manage in January.

Even in the final weekend before Christmas, your allotment can be a source of joy, flavour, and festive spirit. Spend a few hours on the plot — you’ll enjoy the fruits of your labour both on the plate and in your decorations!
