🌱 From seed to bottle & field to fork!

Some of the oilseed we grow is cold pressed into Ramsbury Black Gold Oil here on the estate.

It’s a simple process. The seed, which contains around 40-45% oil, is crushed and the oil is collected. It then settles in a tank for 6–8 weeks before being bottled.

The spent seed, still full of protein, doesn’t go to waste. It follows our closed-loop system and is used to supplement our cattle diet.

Rapeseed also plays an important role in our farming rotation as a break crop, helping to support soil health, as well as having uses as a bio crop.

And then there’s the other end of the journey… from the fields to our kitchen, where our Head Chef at The Bell at Ramsbury uses the oil in the food we serve.

This is exactly the sort of connection we love bringing to life through our Farming & Countryside Education programme, helping children see how what is grown in the field can eventually make its way onto their plate.

Even mayonnaise starts with a seed! 👨‍🍳🌱

With weather windows tightening, this XERION can cover 1.5–2× the ground of a conventional tractor, depending on conditions and the implement being used.

When the weather gives you a window, every pass counts.

How much of a British farm is actually British made?

The shovel, complete with a Union Jack, sparked an interesting conversation on this months taste of Ramsbury experience tour.

It made us wonder… how much of the equipment on a British farm is actually made here in the UK?

While many tractors and combines are built overseas, Britain is still home to some fantastic agricultural engineering.

If you’ve got British-made machinery or equipment on your farm, we’d love to see it. Share a photo in the comments! 🇬🇧

Our grain to glass “Taste of Ramsbury experience tour” began when teachers visiting with their pupils asked, “Could you organise a visit to the estate for adults too?”

And so it began. Once a month from May to September, small groups of up to 17 people experience our field to bottle story, starting and finishing at The Bell at Ramsbury; gateway to the Ramsbury Estate.

Because a love of learning should be lifelong.

Every visit we host is about helping young people understand where food comes from and why caring for our countryside matters.

Sadly, this week we found a large amount of illegally dumped waste near Ramsbury. While it takes only a few minutes to dump, it takes far longer to remove and can affect wildlife, farming and the environment.

We hope that by inspiring the next generation to value the countryside, we can all play a part in protecting it for years to come.

If you see fly-tipping, please report it to your local council.

This incident has been reported to Wiltshire Council.

The visitor I didn’t expect…

Waiting quietly in the hedge line as the combines worked along the field margin, a fallow deer buck stepped out from the woodland.

The harvest lights glowed in the distance, but he wasn’t interested in the machinery, his attention was on me. Hidden in the hedge and downwind, I became the mystery he was trying to solve.
