is thrilled to welcome acclaimed author SANDRA NEWMAN to Furzedown!

Thursday 19th September at 7:30 PM will be an inspiring evening with the author of:

The Country of Ice Cream Star (longlisted for the Bailey’s Prize)
The Only Good Thing Anyone Has Ever Done (shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award)
Cake, The Heavens, and The Men.
Sandra, a graduate of the University of East Anglia Creative Writing program, now lives in London and brings a unique voice and perspective to contemporary literature.

This event is a special collaboration supported by the Eccles Institute at the British Library, which has strong historical ties to Furzedown through the Thrales of Streatham Park. Mary Eccles acquired the Thrales’ library and wrote extensively about them—part of this collection now resides at the British Library. We’re delighted that the Eccles Institute, which fosters cultural exchange between the USA and the UK, is helping us bring Sandra Newman to Furzedown LitFest 2025.

Supported using public funding by Arts Council England.

📅 Save the date: 19th September, 7:30 PM.
🎟️ Tickets available in link in bio

Streatham’s Only Community Fitness Hub Under Threat

As a local resident and founder of GZZ™ (GloriaZumbaZin), I’ve been leading weekly Zumba® Fitness classes at
The Wellfield Centre (SYCT), 16 Wellfield Road, London SW16 2BP since 2017.

Together, we’ve built a warm, supportive community for adults aged 30 to 60+, a space to move, connect, and feel good both mentally and physically. 💃🏽❤️

But now, the centre’s future is uncertain. The closure is not confirmed, but the threat alone is already hurting us.

⚠️ There is no other community centre like SYCT in Streatham.
If this space disappears… where do people go?

These classes are more than workouts.
They are lifelines, especially for those dealing with loneliness, stress, or chronic health challenges. We’ve managed online & outdoor options, but nothing replaces the magic of in-person connection. ✨

We urgently need your help: visibility, support, or a new venue near Streatham Hill where this community can continue to thrive. 🏠🙏🏽

If you’re a local resident, organisation, or venue that can help, or if you simply believe in protecting community spaces in Streatham, please share this post.

• Woodfield Craftivists have been at it again...
There’s a new exhibition on the streets - from Streatham to Balham a selection of postboxes are now decorated with wonderful Toppers.

The latest campaign from Woodfield Craftivists is a celebration of British Women, timed to coincide with International Women’s Week. They will unveil a series of postbox toppers each featuring a different sector from Scientists to Writers. You will find the postboxes around Balham and Streatham.

If you spot one, please post it on Instagram with hashtag!
Woodfield Craftivists use craft as a form of activism, creating a whole range of different products from beautifully embroidered bags for taking your litter home on Tooting common to smiley badges to promote positive mental health and, of course, postbox toppers.
