‼️National Marine Week Post 4️⃣ 🌊

Today's post highlights our recent article in The Marine Biologist, the member magazine of the Marine Biological Association 💚 💙

Our Marine Ecologist Athena Allen was lucky enough to have her article on Blue Carbon mapping in EU waters published in the July edition of this renowned magazine🥳

The article discusses a fascinating and important NatureBureau project which aims to map stored organic carbon for all EU waters in order to inform policy makers for legislation such as the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. This endeavour is the first of its kind at this scale and will be a valuable tool for the European Commission 🥇 🌿

Blue Carbon is a hot topic in marine science at the moment and we are proud to be playing our part in uncovering its mystery 🔍

‼️National Marine Week Post 3️⃣ 🌊

Today's post highlights the recent Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management - CIEEM blog series! 💚 💙

Over the course of the two week celebration, members of the Marine and Coastal Special Interest Group have been posting blogs on the CIEEM website focusing on the topic of marine citizen science. 🦭 🐬

Today's blog is written by our Marine Ecologist, Athena Allen and focuses on the amazing work of The Rock Pool Project. This community lead project not only encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to get out onto our beaches but ensures that the species that they find are documented in way which can be used to inform science and policy. 🦀 🐚 🐟

Read the blog on the link below to find out how you can get involved with this project!

‼️National Marine Week Post 2️⃣ 🌊

Today's post highlights a short blog which we have recently had published on the IUCN Congress 2025 website about our work with the German Government on harmonising shark conservation across sectors 🦈

Sharks and rays are some of the most threatened species in our oceans – yet conserving them effectively means navigating a complex landscape of policy and practice 🗺️

This project brought stakeholders together through expert surveys and collaborative workshops to discuss policy innovations that make a measurable difference for the future of sharks, rays, and their habitats 🌏

The work feeds directly into the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025 in Abu Dhabi, acting as a stepping stone toward policy innovations that can make a measurable, real-world difference 💙

‼️ National Marine Week Post 1️⃣ 🌊

Today's post is focusing on the recent work of our Marine Ecologist, Athena on investigating the predation of cuttlefish along the coast of the English Channel and the North Sea 🐙

Along with a team of citizen scientists, Athena has collected over 300 images of cuttlebones from each location. These images will be used to analyse the cuttlebones for any teeth markings left behind by potential predators or scavengers of the cuttlefish. Using this information, we can begin to understand where the cuttlefish lie in the local food web as both live food and food for scavengers 🦭 🐬 🪿

But, Athena cannot do it alone! The cuttlebone images have now been uploaded to a site called BIIGLE party and we are calling for the help of more citizen scientists to annotate the teeth markings! 🦷 💻

If you are interested in these fascinating creatures and want to help learn more about them then visit the link below to have a go at annotating the images! Don't worry, a full set of instructions is provided! 💚 🩵

🐝 It’s Don’t Step on a Bee Day!

At NatureBureau, we’re all about protecting pollinators, not just today, but every day 💚

Bees play a vital role in ecosystems and food production, yet they’re under threat from habitat loss, pesticides, and climate change 📉

Today’s a good reminder to watch your step, plant wildflowers, and let your lawn grow wild 🌿

Let’s give bees the space they need to thrive 🌼🌍

Tomorrow is National Meadows Day! 🌷🌿

Over 700 species of flowering plants live in meadows and they are incredibly important as a food source for pollinators and are massive carbon sinks 🌼🐝

However, due to changes in farming practices, the UK has lost approximately 97% of it's meadows in the last 70 years 📉

NatureBureau is playing a part in maintaining these amazing habitats through our SSSI management project for Pennyroyal (pictured in the right hand bubble) in Bray, Berkshire 💚🌱

As part of the management of the site our team organise volunteer days to pull scrub and invasive species, complete annual species presence surveys, and report to the landowners 🐞🦋

The next volunteer day is on 24th July so bring some gardening gloves and come along!!😍
