The World According to Garp (1982)
Dir: George Roy Hill
John Irving's novel about writer Garp's (Robin Williams) rights-of-passage from boy to adulthood and his attempts to become a successful writer in the shadow of his eccentric mother (Glenn Close) who inadvertently - through her own writing - becomes a feminist icon. Containing some remarkably progressive themes for the early 80's and late 70's when the novel was written - with a sympathetic portrayal of a trans character in the guise of John Lithgow's Roberta - the film is not afraid to be even-handed in it's depiction of such themes, like the negative view it takes on militant feminism in the guise of an all-female collective that use a r**e victim as a martyr, despite the victim herself (Amanda Plumber) wanting no association with said cause.
Robin Williams is great here in an early - post-Mork and Mindy -role; arguably the most successful actor in history to straddle both the comedy and drama world. A film which garnered mild critical praise on it's initial release; it has always been of note to myself as one of a mere 408 movies out of over 16'000 to garner the coveted rating of ☆☆☆☆ out of four in Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide.
