Spoke to a wedding photographer today who’d spent over £1,500 on Facebook ads and got just one possible booking from it.

He’d been clicking “Promote” on his page, running campaigns without strategy, and hoping something would stick.

Turns out:

He had one campaign that delivered 200 landing page views at just 35p each.

But he turned it off because he didn’t know if it was working.

His current ad has 0 landing page views but is still spending money daily.

This is the problem with Facebook’s “boost” button. It’s easy. It’s quick. But it doesn’t work the way you think it does.

If you're not using proper campaign objectives (like Leads), installing your pixel, and tracking actual landing page views, you're throwing money away.

We broke it down, simplified the approach, and showed him how to:

✅️ Switch from traffic to lead campaigns

✅️ Use his website contact form as the conversion goal

✅️ Improve visibility with better CTA placement

I’ve had loads of business owners say to me, “Facebook Ads just don’t work for us.”

But most of the time, it’s not the ads. It’s what you’re asking the ads to do.

Here’s where I see it going wrong:

➡️ The offer doesn’t land. If it doesn’t feel valuable or urgent, people won’t act.

➡️ The copy’s too vague. If you’re not clear about who it’s for or what problem it solves, it gets ignored.

➡️ The strategy’s off. The tech is easy to blame, but nine times out of ten, it’s the message that’s broken.

If you’re spending money and not seeing a return, it’s time to look at the basics.

Strong offer. Clear message. Right audience. That’s the stuff that makes ads work.

Had a chat with a business owner who was losing confidence in Facebook ads after spending £1,700 with little to show for it.

The ads were doing their job, hundreds of people were clicking through to the website, but only one person actually filled out the form.

The ads weren’t the issue...

The targeting was right, the traffic was high quality, and people were landing on the page. But the website wasn’t converting them.

So, what’s the fix?

Instead of continuing to send people to a page that isn’t working, we’re switching to lead forms directly on Facebook.

By capturing details before sending them to the website, we should be able to qualify leads better and stop losing them at the landing page stage. Facebook also favours in-platform engagement, so we’re expecting stronger performance by keeping that first interaction within the app.

This isn’t about throwing more money at ads. The traffic is there. The problem is the website isn’t converting it. Now, we’re adjusting the approach to make sure those clicks actually turn into customers.

If your ads are getting traffic but not sales, the issue might not be the ad, it might be where you’re sending people.

You do not need high production to make video work in your ads.

In fact, sometimes a simple video filmed on your phone outperforms everything else.

The goal is not perfection, it is connection.

Show your face. Talk directly to your audience.

Explain what you offer and why it matters, clearly and calmly.

Keep the video short. Thirty seconds can be enough.

Use captions so people can follow along with the sound off.

And always end with a clear call-to-action.

Video builds trust. It makes you feel real.

That alone can drive more clicks and conversions than a polished graphic.

I had a call today with someone running a solid side hustle, buying and reconditioning pre-loved furniture and selling it on.

Up until recently, things were flying. A few photos on Facebook Marketplace, a bit of boosting here and there, and sofas were selling fast.

But now? It’s dried up.

He’s still got the stock. Still got demand. But the boosts just aren’t cutting it anymore and the advice he got from a recent course left him more confused than confident. Too much jargon, not enough action.

He told me:

🗣️ “I just want people to come to me, instead of me constantly posting and hoping. I want proper leads.”

That’s the difference between boosting and running proper ads:

That opening sentence is everything.

Too many people waste it with waffle like
“We’re excited to announce…” or
“Here at [business name], we…”

No one cares.

In my own ads, and in every client campaign we run, the hook has to speak to what your audience is feeling.

Confused? Stuck? Overwhelmed?
Call it out. Then show them you get it. That’s what makes them stop scrolling.

Don’t overthink your ads.
But don’t underestimate the power of your first sentence either.

You don’t need a flashy ad campaign. You don’t need perfectly curated content. What actually works across social media is when you let people in.

Small business owners who share the real side of running a business are seeing more engagement, more support, and more sales. Not because they’re pushing harder, but because they’re being honest.

Yet so many businesses are still scared to show up. They worry about looking too small, too messy, too unpolished. But in truth, polished doesn’t connect, people do.

When I first started running Facebook Ads, I didn’t have a clue what the pixel was.

I was spending money, getting clicks… but had no idea what happened after that. Were people buying? Was the ad working? No idea.

Once I understood the Facebook Pixel, everything changed and improved.

It’s what tells you what people do after they click. Did they buy? Did they sign up? Did they leave the page? Without it, you’re just guessing.

If you’re running ads, or thinking about it, and you haven’t set up your pixel, please sort that first. Otherwise, you're spending money with no way of knowing if it’s working.

Think of it like this: if you had a shop and no till, you’d have no idea what you were selling. Same with your ads.

I had no clue what I was doing when I first ran a Facebook ad.
