The Ad You Love Might Be the One That Fails

I’ve lost count of the number of times a client has told me, “This is the ad thats going to work”, only for it to flop. On the flip side, I’ve seen ads that looked basic, or ones they weren’t convinced by, bring in the best results.

Why? Because what you love doesn’t matter, the data does.

It’s easy to get attached to an ad. You think the copy is perfect, the image is strong, and you’d click on it yourself. But you’re not your audience.

I’ve had campaigns where a simple, straight-to-the-point ad outperformed a polished, high-production version. Why? Because the audience decides what works, not us.

I had £5 a day and a clear goal.

I had a call with a marketing manager who’s running multiple seasonal events with a tiny team and a tight budget.

She told me the biggest challenge wasn’t the events themselves. It was convincing the owners to spend even £5–£10 per day on ads. They’d never invested properly in paid marketing before and the thought of “wasting money” was making them anxious.

We broke it down into something simple. Focus September and October on awareness for the Christmas market. Then switch budget towards grotto ticket sales in November. Weekly reporting so they can see what’s working. And a clear plan to adapt based on results.

The fear of spending on ads is real. I’ve been there myself. When I started, £5 a day was all I could afford, so I understand how daunting it feels. That’s why we treat client budgets like our own — carefully, strategically, and always with results in mind.

That came up in a call I had with a local business owner locked into a franchise PPC package. The problem?

Today I jumped on a call with the owners of a brand new outdoor bootcamp in London.

They were excited.
They were also completely overwhelmed.

Google ads or Facebook ads?
Instagram or TikTok?
"Do we need to spend thousands".
"Do we have to stand in front of the camera and shout at people in a Reel".

Here is what came out of the conversation that you might need to hear as well.

They had done everything right so far.
A proper outdoor bootcamp. Small groups. Focus on strength and conditioning. A real community feel.

But like most startups, they were hearing noise from everywhere.

One person said
"You must do Google".

Someone else said
"You can just do your own ads".

Their web designer said
"Get reviews and run Google".

Meanwhile they just wanted a simple answer.
How do we fill our classes without losing our minds and our cash?

On the call we stripped it back.

I explained the difference like this:

👉 Google is where the 3 percent who are ready to buy right now go
They know they want a lunchtime bootcamp so they type it in and choose from whoever appears

👉 Facebook and Instagram are where the other 97 percent are
They know they need to get fitter
They work from home
They scroll at lunchtime
They just do not know your bootcamp exists yet

For a local service like theirs we agreed to start simple:

👉 Facebook and Instagram first
👉 Around £5 a day to get in front of targeted people near their location
👉 Test different audiences and messages rather than guessing
👉 Let the data tell us what works and then do more of that

We also cleared up two big fears they had.

Fear one
Do we need to post those awkward selfie videos saying...
"Hi I am X and I am looking for 10 women to join my programme".

No.

If you do not want to be that person, you do not have to be.
They already had great photos and clips of real sessions. That is more than enough to build strong ads.

Fear two
What if the ads work too well and we get too busy.

We talked about how ads should not be an on off tap.
You do not want to be the business that turns everything off when full and then panics when it goes quiet.

Instead you:

✅ Keep a steady budget running
✅ Build a waiting list
✅ Raise prices when demand is strong
✅ Use ads as a predictable pipeline, not a one off blast

By the end of the call one of them said

"I needed this chat to feel comfortable".

That is the bit that matters for me.
Most small businesses do not need huge budgets or fancy funnels.
They need clarity, a realistic starting point and someone to translate the tech into normal language.
