Hello

I've had the pleasure of working with artists such as
Kikagaku Moyo, Rozi Plain, Wendy Rae Fowler,
Leo Tayler, Upupayama, Big Joanie and Bas Jan
with releases on Sub Pop, Memphis Industries,
Kill All Rockstars, Beyond Beyond is Beyond
and Neolithic Recordings.

electrical energy to evoke emotions. My approach leans towards intuition and performance,
blending live recording with creative sonic manipulation. I currently work out of Press Play in South London
and my own mix room in Kent,
but am happy to work in any studio.

The second single from new project is out now.

Created over a bunch of weekends at Al would play a drum pattern or a riff idea and from that we would build out each song, Cutting up drums, Wonky synths and bags of fx pedals all helped to create a unique collection of songs.

New additions to the mic collection.
Picked up a pair of AKG pencils and a Beyer M88.
Recently got into the Beyer on Kick drum, and love it on bass amps. It’s also pretty sweet on vocals.

I’m really into my small diaphragm condensers. (Love my Schoeps) and these AKGs are great for spots, Big into the Snare (doubled with a dynamic👌) Hats, percussion etc etc..

Had the very fine pleasure of recording ‘Sayonara’ on new album!
A good chunk of the album was recorded at and it was nice to get to lay my hand on a small part on this full length.

A little while back Billy asked if I could help finish some recordings he had done on his Revox G36. He handed me the Revox & a big bag of reels and I set about digitising. Much recorded in his house, some live performances at the local boozers.

Over a few weeks he’d come by my place and we would mix & master the selected songs. Two tracks at 7.5ips. Billy/guitar on track one, the rest of the band on track two.
A nice exercise in simplicity and balance!

The result of these sessions was a series of limited releases on 7” some only available at shows. Now up to stream.

Was going through some old hard drives recently and came across a lot of old personal work from 2013 and before.
Figured it’s better off shared than sitting on a dusty old drive. So here is ‘Old Signals’ a small collection of short raw synth jams. Inspired by red string w**d, UFOs and made while living in east London’s windowless warehouses. FFO : pastoral ambience, drone, Cosmic sounds.

Hopefully a catalyst to working on some newer (more refined!) stuff, collaborating with others. Somehow..between childcare and making records for others.. 🪐

At last week tracking a song for .theband Great job guys!
Loving my on Drum ORTF duties.

The wooden ‘briefcase’ baffle in front of the kick is something I built a while ago. Works a treat for in front of drums/kicks etc. I really enjoy building gobo/studio ‘acoustic stuff’. If anyone fancies something similar let me know!

My name is Chris Smith and I own and run Kluster, a production & recording studio based in Limehouse, East London. I'm a music producer, recording & mix engineer and love working on records!

In the studio I love blending live performances with creative studio processing to create the sound that's in your head!
