Sad to see this news. John Smallwood has always been so welcoming at the Talyllyn Railway and we have enjoyed many hours in his company. He has been an absolute gem for the railway and we will miss him greatly.

We remember a great friend today - Jeremy English, a pioneer of railway video magazines as 'Railscene', a genuine character, and a great friend to Oakwood. We remember him fondly.

We met and travelled with Major Poyntz on the 'Train for Life' to Kosovo in 1999, and enjoyed both his company and wisdom, so it is great to see this locomotive naming in his memory.

Interesting, we think, that ‘quartering’ - the process of ensuring crankpins on each pair of driving wheels are in exactly the correct relationship to each other and to all other pairs of wheels on the loco - is the term used for both 2 and 3-cylinder locos, despite the different calculations, 120 degrees (3-cyl) rather than 90/360.
So on a 3-cylinder loco, if the crank pin is at the top on one side of the loco, the crank pin on the corresponding wheel (same axle) will be at 120 degrees to it. Accurate quartering ensures smooth running.
