Loving the BBC’s new Civilsations: Rise and Fall series.
The Rome episode laid bare the societal tensions that emerge a with increasing gap between super-rich and poor - so very relevant to the last 20 years here. The wealthy Roman families - with their extravagant lifestyles, huge landholdings and palatial villas - were the equivalent of today's billionaires.

And my book Domination makes for good extra reading too! I did think it a bit strange to avoid any mention of Christianity as the state religion of Rome by the end of the 4th century - it had taken over much of the 'business' of the state and contributed to decreasing tax revenues too as bishops & monasteries claimed exemptions!

Plus - in its resplendent purple and gold livery, Domination would make for a glittering Christmas present, obviously!
