HSE retracts emergency stop statement

In a significant move, the UK's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has retracted its recent statement on emergency stop buttons in MEWPs, following concerns raised by industry associations, including IPAF. The initial guidance caused confusion regarding the role of alarms and other safety-related features on these machines.

After dialogue with IPAF and other industry representatives, HSE acknowledged that the statement did not accurately reflect common industry practices and has apologized for the misunderstanding.

Key Takeaway: The emergency stop should not impair the functionality of other safety systems, but alarms were not meant to be categorized as safety devices. HSE is now working to clarify this and ensure the correct interpretation of safety standards.
