West Belfast rap trio Kneecap are taking legal action against a Canadian MP over comments made in an announcement banning the band from the country.

Canadian Liberal MP and Parliamentary Secretary for Combating Crime Vince Gasparro announced the ban in September ahead of the band’s planned visit to the country.

Mr Gasparro cited a charge under the Terrorism Act against Kneecap member Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh.

The charge, of displaying support for Hezbollah, a proscribed organisation, was dropped following a court hearing at the end of September.

Kneecap described the comments made by Mr Gasparro as “wholly untrue and deeply malicious”.

In a statement on social media, the band noted the Canadian politician said he was acting on behalf of the Canadian government.

It emerged earlier this week the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) were not involved in the announcement barring Kneecap from the country.

In response to a question tabled in the Canadian House of Commons on the handling of the matter, it was revealed federal officials were not consulted ahead of the announcement.

“Today we are serving legal action against you,” the group said in the statement addressed to Mr Gasparro. “As we said, we will be relentless in defending ourselves against outrageous and baseless accusations.”

They added: “When we beat you in court, which we will, we will donate every cent of your money to assist the thousands of child amputees in Gaza.”
