In a review of 24 journals with a total of more than 2,000 board members, it was found that, decisions about what gets researched, published, and funded in tropical medicine remain largely in the hands of wealthy countries, driven by deep inequalities in the editorial boards of the main journals in the field.

A review of tropical medicine journals shows disease-affected regions to be severely underrepresented on editorial boards.

Climate change thrives on social inequities, and urban heat islands are the prime example.

“A study published in the journal Urban Sustainability analysed surface urban heat island intensity trends across more than 5 million urban grids globally between 2003 and 2018. It found that urban areas are heating up at an average rate of 0.021 degrees Celsius per year, with low- and middle-income countries seeing the most pronounced net increase” reports Mohammed El-Said for SciDev.Net .

Despite nearly 300 global commitments made since 2021, food systems remain vulnerable to shocks, and malnutrition, poverty, and inequality persist.

But there is measurable progress. CGIAR-supported research is behind improved crop varieties, livestock breeds, and biofortified foods now feeding millions, with countries like Kenya scaling up school meal programs as a foundation for future resilience.

As Thilsted and Elouafi argue: “This is the moment to double down on investment and collaboration to put agri-food research into action at scale.”

Four years after the first UN Food Systems Summit, the world needs progress, write Shakuntala Haraksingh Thilsted and Ismahane Elouafi.

What happens when you blend science, market gaps, and youth ambition? In Ghana, it led to a business selling 60 bottles of cashew juice a day, from a fruit most farmers ignore.

Through the MA-CASH programme, young entrepreneurs are being trained to turn waste into value-added products with commercial potential. From kebabs to feedstock, the pipeline of innovation is growing.

A science-led project in Ghana is turning cashew apple waste into juice, sausage and compost, generating income for youth.

Ghana is modernising its rural health referral system.
Researchers at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have built mobile app that is helping frontline workers coordinate emergency cases faster, avoid delays, and get patients to the right care on time.
This development was made possible through the support of the Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI).

Mobile health app enables rural Ghanaians to book appointments, access local language health info.
