In this article, Elina Daryani explores the Netflix documentary ‘Grenfell Uncovered’, highlighting the role of deregulation and a failure to learn from past mistakes in failing the Grenfell community. Trans rights are human rights, and the UK Supreme Court’s ruling undermines this, Meghana Pappu argues.

In her article, she argues that by threatening the rights of trans folk, the ruling also has implications for the entire woman-identifying community. It jeopardizes safe spaces for trans-women, who are at greater risk of violence and harassment than their cisgender counterparts. However, Pappu argues that all hope should not be lost yet, that she aspires and will fight for a future in which the trans community faces equal protections to the rest of the population and are no longer used as a political tool, and instead as humans.

Following his death last Monday, Rosie Robertson takes a moment to reflect on Pope Francis’ life and the impact he had on life across the globe.

From his advocacy for the end of war in Gaza and the Palestinian people, to his notable encyclical Laudato Si’, in which he called for greater efforts to stop climate change, Pope Francis’ life was marked by fights for freedom and equality for all. His humble approach to the Papacy has served as a reminder for Christians to reflect on their stewardship, and has set a strong precedent for future popes to live up to.

The American Spirit, as we know it is gone; however, it might just be replaced by something even better, Meghana Pappu argues.

In this article, Pappu explores her perceptions of the American Spirit in response to a recent article by John Harris for the Guardian. She highlights her own experience observing America in her own upbringing, through the music, TV shows and movies she watched. Using music as a continuous metaphor throughout this piece, she argues that the American Spirit as we know it may not survive the Trump administration, but a new version may grow in its wake.

The crisis in Cameroon, with the tensions originating in the problems caused by the French and English colonial powers, has been continuously overlooked.

Joakim Mol Romero’s article explores the problems at the centre of the crisis, with calls for independence for the Ambazonian region a significant point of contention in the crisis. He discusses the tenuous involvement of Anglophone leaders across the world in resolving the crisis, contending that the previous colonial powers in the country have a responsibility in resolving the crisis that has resulted from their historical influence.

With fascism on the rise across the world, it is more important than ever to continue to empathise with those around the world from a diverse range of backgrounds.

In this alumnus special, Tom Lowe discusses the importance of empathy in a polarized political landscape. He argues that the ‘divisions’, framed in such a way by fascists, should be seen as diversity within society. He further explores the inequalities used to polarize society, arguing that an empathetic approach to politics is necessary to stand against the rise of fascism across the world.

Wildlife translocation may be well-intended for the welfare of the animals, however the consequences for those living among the new inhabitants need to be considered in greater detail.

Jack Keen uses the recent translocation of Malawi elephants as an example of the failings of conservation practices to navigate the welfare of locals now living with a new herd of elephants. He emphasises the important role that conservation plays in protecting endangered species such as bull elephants in Malawi, however explains that these practices need to evolve to improve the lives of both the endangered animals and the citizens now living with them.
