This is the video for the first ever release on MADE on EARTH, which is the funky soulful partner label to MADE IN SPACE Records.
It’s a beautiful track called ‘In Came You’ which was written and recorded by DEEP SEA COSMONAUTS, who at that time were a th*****me Steve Cosmonaut, Dave Clough & Micky Simms.
The track was recorded at Vanguard Studios in South London over a period of a year or two with many amazing musicians and singers appearing on it.
The song started life as a bit of an experiment for Steve & Micky, and as it developed and expanded, they both knew they had created something special. Dave, better known as keyboard wizard Davos, came down from his hometown of Blackpool and got to work, laying down all of the piano parts, and cementing his place in the group.
New York lyricist/ vocalist, Eric Clark, otherwise known as E-Man, was sent a rough demo of the track so that he might be inspired to write and record a vocal part for it. Eric was already a well known artist having previously collaborated with Jon Cutler on the hugely successful record ‘It’s Yours’.
In his home studio in New York, Eric wrote and recorded the words that were to become the main verses and provide the title to ‘In Came You’. He then sent the recordings to Steve & Micky in London and work really began on the track.
Eric is not a singer, he’s more of a poet or a storyteller, his deep and savvy New Jersey accent providing the perfect authentic voice for the track. However the boys also wanted a chorus that was soulful and uplifting so Steve began writing some additional lyrics.
Acantha Lang, a talented soulful singer from New Orleans but now residing in London was brought in and recorded the chorus that Steve had written. Then, to fill out and add to Acantha’s performance, another singer, Jaelee Small, came in and provided backing vocals, harmonies and some ad libs.
‘In Came You’ was starting to take shape now but the boys wanted more. Musicians such as Tony Hayden (trombone) & Max Grunhard (saxophone) who are both members of renowned Afro-funk band Ibibio Sound Machine, and violinist Sally Potterton were brought in to record parts, giving the track the ‘real’ sound element it needed.
Eventually other musicians were brought in to record guitars, bass and percussion, replacing all the synthesised instruments that were originally in the track.
What had started out as a bit of a mess about in the studio had turned into a labour of love that took quite a significant amount of time and the involvement of numerous talented musicians, writing , recording, then re-recording until eventually it was ready.
This video was the brainchild of Steve who managed to pull together young videographer Jake Tull, and draft in longtime friend Sophie and her daughter Immie, on a cold afternoon in Greenwich.
