Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jamaโah believe that the angels are completely obedient servants of Allah. They do not rebel against Him, deliberately or freely disobey His commands, or act according to sinful desires as human beings and jinn can.
๐ Allah says: โO you who believe, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are angels, harsh and severe. They do not disobey Allah in what He commands them, but do what they are commanded.โ
Quran 66:6
โ
This verse is very clear. Allah describes the angels as servants who carry out His commands exactly as He orders them. When Allah commands them to perform a particular task, they do not refuse, delay out of rebellion, or replace Allahโs command with their own desire. Their obedience is complete.
๐Allah also says: โThey do not speak before He speaks, and they act only by His command.โ
Quran 21:27
โ
This shows their complete submission to Allah. They do not put themselves before their Lord. They do not decide independently what should be done. They wait for the command of Allah and then carry it out.
๐ Allah further says: โThey glorify Him night and day; they never slacken.โ
Quran 21:20
๐ And Allah says: โIf they are too arrogant to worship Him, then those nearest to your Lord glorify Him night and day, and they never grow weary.โ
Quran 41:38
โ
The meaning is that the angels are constantly engaged in the worship and obedience of Allah. They do not become tired of worship in the sense of becoming unwilling to continue. Their worship does not stop because of laziness, boredom, arrogance or desire for something else. Their entire existence is one of obedience to their Creator.
โ๏ธ This is different from human beings and jinn. Allah gave human beings and jinn a will and commanded them to obey Him, but they can choose obedience or disobedience. That is why among mankind there are believers and disbelievers, righteous people and sinners. Among the jinn there are also believers and disbelievers.
๐ Allah says concerning the jinn: โAmong us are those who are righteous, and among us are others who are less than that. We follow different paths.โ
Quran 72:11
๐ Allah specifically says: โThey do not disobey Allah in what He commands them.โ
Qurโan 66:6
โ๏ธ Therefore, when we find stories or popular claims suggesting that an angel rebelled against Allah, we must examine them against the Quran and authentic Sunnah rather than accepting them simply because they are common. A very important example is Iblis. Some people call Iblis a โfallen angel,โ but this is incorrect according to the Quran. When Allah commanded those present to prostrate to Adam, Iblis refused.
๐ Allah says: โAnd when We said to the angels, โProstrate before Adam,โ they all prostrated except Iblis. He was one of the jinn, so he rebelled against the command of his Lord.โ
Quran 18:50
โ
This verse explicitly says Iblis was from the jinn. Therefore, Iblis should not be used as an example of an angel disobeying Allah. The angels obeyed Allahโs command; Iblis, who was from the jinn, refused.
๐ก This is an important Athari principle: we do not build Aqeedah upon stories borrowed from other religious traditions, Israโiliyyat, folklore or popular preaching when the Quran has already clarified the matter.
โธป*โโโ*โโโ*โโโ
โ๏ธ ANGELS WORSHIP ALLAH - The angels are not merely messengers who carry out worldly tasks. They are also worshippers of Allah.
๐ Allah says: โThose nearest to Him do not disdain to worship Him, nor do they become weary. They glorify Him night and day; they never slacken.โ
Qurโan 21:19-20
โ
This establishes that the angels worship Allah continuously. Their worship includes tasbih, glorifying Allah, as well as other forms of obedience and worship that Allah has assigned to them. So when we speak about angels, we should never imagine them as independent beings moving around creation according to their own wishes. They are โibad Allah, servants of Allah.
๐ Allah says: โRather, they are honoured servants.โ
Quran 21:26
โ๏ธ The Arabic word โibad is important here. They are servants of Allah, not partners with Him.
Therefore the relationship is:
Allah is worshipped โก๏ธ The angels worship.
Allah is the Creator โก๏ธ The angels are created.
Allah commands โก๏ธ The angels obey.
Allah possesses independent power โก๏ธ The angels possess only the abilities Allah has given them.
๐ก This distinction is part of Tawhid. This is also why worshipping angels is false.
๐ Allah says: โAnd on the Day He will gather them all together, then say to the angels, โWas it you that these people used to worship?โ They will say, โGlory be to You! You are our Protector, not them.โโ
Quran 34:40-41
โ
The angels themselves will reject being worshipped. So if someone says, โI worship an angel because angels are close to Allah,โ this does not make the act permissible. The closeness of the angel to Allah does not make the angel worthy of worship. The angel is still a servant of Allah.
โธป*โโโ*โโโ*โโโ
ANGELS ARE EXTREMELY NUMEROUS - The angels are far more numerous than human beings can comprehend.
๐ Allah says: โAnd none knows the forces of your Lord except Him.โ
Quran 74:31
โ
The phrase โthe forces of your Lordโ includes His vast creation of angels and other unseen forces. Allah alone knows their true number. One of the strongest authentic examples is Al-Bayt al-Mamur, the Frequented House in the heavens. During the Miโraj, the Prophet PBUH, was taken through the heavens. When he reached the seventh heaven, he saw Al-Bayt al-Mamur.
๐ He PBUH said: โThen Al-Bayt al-Mamur was raised up for me. Every day seventy thousand angels enter it, and after entering it they never return to it.โ
This is reported in Sahih al-Bukhari 3207 and Sahih Muslim 164.
โ
The point is not merely that 70,000 angels exist. The wording indicates that a new group of 70,000 angels enters every day, and those who have entered do not return to it. This gives us an idea of how enormous the creation of Allahโs angels is. If 70,000 different angels enter every single day, then over years and centuries the number involved becomes beyond human calculation. But we should not try to calculate the total number because Allah has not given us that number. This is another example of the correct approach toward the unseen. We know what Allah and His Messenger ๏ทบ have told us.
โธป*โโโ*โโโ*โโโ
THE PRACTICAL LESSON
Belief in the angels should affect a Muslimโs daily life. When you are alone and nobody else can see you, remember that Allah sees you, and Allah has appointed angels who record our deeds.
๐ Allah says: โHe does not utter a word except that with him is an observer prepared to record it.โ
Quran 50:18
โ
Therefore, the believer should be careful with his tongue, his actions and even the sins he commits privately. At the same time, this should give hope. A hidden good deed is not forgotten. A private act of charity is not lost. A sincere dua is not meaningless. Allah knows, and the deeds of His servants are recorded. The belief in angels therefore produces muraqabah, awareness that you are never outside the knowledge and observation of Allah.
โธป*โโโ*โโโ*โโโ
1๏ธโฃ Jibril ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู
- is one of the greatest and most honoured angels mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah. His most clearly established duty is carrying Allahโs revelation to His Messengers.
๐ Allah says, โWhoever is an enemy to Jibril, it is he who has brought it down upon your heart by Allahโs permissionโ
Quran 2:97
๐ก The โitโ refers to the Quran, and Jibril ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู
brought it from Allah to the Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ by Allahโs command.
๐ Allah also says, โThe Trustworthy Spirit has brought it down upon your heart, so that you may be one of the warnersโ
Quran 26:193-194
๐ก The โTrustworthy Spiritโ is Jibril ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู
. Allah also describes him as Ar-Ruh al-Amin, the Trustworthy Spirit, showing that he was completely trustworthy in delivering Allahโs revelation.
๐ โWhoever is an enemy to Allah, His angels, His messengers, Jibril and Mikaโil, then indeed Allah is an enemy to the disbelievers.โ
Quran 2:98
Showing the honour of Jibril and Mikaโil. Jibril ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู
was not merely a messenger in the general human sense. He was an angel specifically entrusted with conveying revelation from Allah to His Prophets. He also appeared to the Prophet ๏ทบ in his original form. The Prophet ๏ทบ saw him in his real form. This shows the immense nature of Allahโs creation while reminding us that Jibril remains a servant of Allah, not a partner with Him.
2๏ธโฃ Mikaโil ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู
- is another great angel whose name Allah explicitly mentions in the Quran. There is no doubt about the name Mikaโil because it is established directly by the Quran. His name is also mentioned with Jibril and Israfil in the authentic Sunnah.
๐ The Prophet ๏ทบ would say in his supplication, โO Allah, Lord of Jibril, Mikaโil and Israfilโฆโ
Sahih Muslim 770.
โ๏ธ As for the specific statement that Mikaโil is responsible for rain and vegetation, it is mentioned by some scholars based upon reports concerning his role, but we should be careful about presenting every such detail as though it has the same level of certainty as Quranic evidence.
โ
The Athari method is to distinguish between what is established decisively and what is reported with weaker or less certain evidence. Therefore, what we can state with certainty is that Mikaโil is a mighty angel of Allah, explicitly mentioned by name in the Quran and authentic Sunnah, and that he carries out duties assigned to him by Allah. He has no independent power over rain, crops or creation. Whatever he does is only by the command and permission of Allah.
3๏ธโฃ Israfil ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู
- is the angel associated with the blowing of the Trumpet before the Resurrection. The Quran establishes the event itself very clearly.
๐ Allah says, โAnd the Trumpet will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will fall unconscious except whom Allah wills. Then it will be blown again, and suddenly they will be standing, looking onโ
Quran 39:68
โ๏ธ The Quran does not mention the name Israfil in this verse, but his name is established in authentic Sunnah.
๐ The Prophet ๏ทบ would seek refuge: โO Allah, Lord of Jibril, Mikaโil and Israfil, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen, You judge between Your servants concerning that in which they differ. Guide me, by Your permission, to the truth concerning that over which they differ. Indeed, You guide whom You will to a straight path.โ

ูุณูุชููููู
ู
Sahih Muslim 770, Book of Salat al-Musafirin wa Qasruha.
โ๏ธ Therefore it is correct to identify Israfil as the angel connected with the Trumpet. However, we should not go beyond the evidence and invent details about the exact appearance of the Trumpet, its dimensions, or other unseen matters unless they are established through authentic revelation. Allah has informed us that the Trumpet will be blown and that this will be connected with the events of the Resurrection. We believe it because Allah and His Messenger ๏ทบ informed us.
โ
This is the Athari principle: affirm what is authentically established and stop where the revelation stops.
4๏ธโฃ The Angel of Death
๐ Allah says, โSay: The Angel of Death who has been entrusted with you will take your souls, then to your Lord you will be returnedโ
Quran 32:11
โ๏ธ Allah has not informed us of the personal name of the Angel of Death in the Quran. Allah calls him: ู
ููููู ุงููู
ูููุชู โMalak al-Mawt - The Angel of Deathโ. LTherefore, according to the Athari/Salafi method, we should not say: โAllah named the Angel of Death Azraโil.โ The name Azraโil is found in some later writings and reports, but it is not established by an authentic Quranic verse or authentic Prophetic hadith.
๐ Allah says: โSay: The Angel of Death who has been entrusted with you will take your souls, then to your Lord you will be returned.โ
Quran 32:11
5๏ธโฃ The Angels Who Record Our Deeds - The recording of human deeds is one of the most important realities connected with the angels because it directly affects how a Muslim lives every day.
๐ Allah says, โAnd indeed, over you are guardians, noble scribes, who know whatever you doโ
Quran 82:10-12
๐ Allah also says, โWhen the two receivers receive, seated on the right and on the left. He does not utter a word except that with him is an observer prepared to record itโ
Quran 50:17-18
โ
These verses establish that angels are appointed to record the deeds and statements of human beings. This should create muraqabah, meaning awareness that Allah is watching you and that your actions are not disappearing without consequence. A person may be sitting alone, with nobody around him, but he is not free from Allahโs knowledge or from the recording of his deeds. Therefore, before speaking, posting something online, insulting someone, lying, backbiting, or committing a private sin, a believer should remember that his words and actions are being recorded. At the same time, this gives hope. A hidden act of charity, a private dua, a sincere prayer, helping someone without anyone knowing, or refraining from a sin for Allahโs sake is not lost. Allah knows it, and the deeds are recorded.
๐ Are They Called Kiraman Katibin?
๐ Allah says, โAnd indeed, over you are guardians, noble scribesโ
Quran 82:10-11
The expression Kiraman Katibin means noble recording scribes, and it is an established Quranic description of the angels appointed over human beings.
โ๏ธ A common mistake is to say with certainty that the personal names of these two angels are Raqib and Atid.
Allah says: โWhen the two receivers receive, seated on the right and on the left. He does not utter a word except that with him is an observer prepared.โ
Quran 50:17-18
๐กThey are described as al-Mutalaqqiyฤn, the two receivers who receive and record what the person does. Raqib: an observer/watchful guardian. Atid: ready/prepared.
โ
The stronger way to understand these words is as descriptions, meaning an observer who is prepared, rather than established personal names. Therefore, when teaching Aqeedah, we should not say, โAllah named the two recording angels Raqib and Atid,โ because the Quran does not clearly establish them as their personal names. This small distinction is important because the methodology of Ahl al-Sunnah is based upon evidence, not popular terminology. If Allah gives us a description, we affirm the description. We do not automatically turn that description into a personal name.
5๏ธโฃ The Angels of the Grave - Ahl al-Sunnah believe in the questioning of the deceased in the grave. This is part of the established belief concerning Barzakh, the intermediate life between death and resurrection.
๐ Allah says, โAnd behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrectedโ
Quran 23:100
Authentic hadith explain that after a person dies, he is questioned concerning his Lord, his religion and the Messenger who was sent to him. The believer will be given firmness and will answer correctly, while the disbeliever or hypocrite will be unable to give the correct answer.
๐ Allah says, โAllah keeps firm those who believe with the firm word in this worldly life and in the Hereafterโ
Quran 14:27
โ
The names Munkar and Nakir are mentioned in hadith concerning these two angels. The well-known narration is reported in Jamiโ al-Tirmidhi 1071, where al-Tirmidhi graded the report Hasan. The reality of the questioning itself is supported by numerous authentic narrations, including those in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. Therefore, the believer accepts this as a matter of the unseen. We do not need to see these angels to believe in them. Our belief is based upon revelation.
6๏ธโฃ Malik, the Guardian of Hell - Allah explicitly mentions an angel named Malik, who is the keeper or guardian of Hell.
๐ Allah says concerning the people of Hell, โAnd they will call, โO Malik, let your Lord finish us!โ He will say, โYou will remainโโ
Quran 43:77
โ
Therefore Malik is established directly by the Qurโan, unlike names that are merely popular in later literature. Allah also describes the angels appointed over Hell as extremely severe and completely obedient.
Allah says: โOver it are angels, harsh and severe; they do not disobey Allah in what He commands them and they do what they are commandedโ
Quran 66:6
โ
Their harshness does not mean they act unjustly or independently. They execute Allahโs commands perfectly. Allah is never unjust, and His angels do not act according to personal anger, desire or rebellion. Malik and the angels of Hell therefore demonstrate another important part of Aqeedah: Allah has created angels for different duties, and whatever they do is done according to His command and perfect justice.
โโโ*โโโ A Warning to Muslims: Do Not Build Aqeedah on Unverified Stories โโโ*โโโ
A Muslim must be extremely careful when speaking about Allah, His angels, the unseen, the Prophets, the Companions, and matters of Aqeedah. These are not subjects where we repeat every story we hear simply because it sounds religious, emotional, or has been circulating for generations. Not every popular story is revelation, not every narration is authentic, and not every statement attributed to a scholar is actually established from him. You may hear claims about the names of angels, their appearance, their duties, what happens in the grave, what exists in the heavens, or what a particular Prophet or angel supposedly said. The correct question is not, โIs this story famous?โ but โWhat is the evidence?โ If it is from the Qurโan, examine the verse. If it is a hadith, verify its source and grading. If it is attributed to a Companion or scholar, verify the report and attribution.
๐ Allah says, โSay: None in the heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allahโ
Qur an 27:65
Therefore, we cannot establish details of the unseen through imagination, dreams, folklore, paintings, social media posts, weak narrations, or stories passed from one person to another. Before sharing any Islamic claim, especially one concerning Aqeedah, ask: What is the source? Is it Quran or authentic Sunnah? What did the Companions understand from it? Did the Salaf affirm it? Is it an established fact or merely an interpretation? Is it actually part of Aqeedah or simply a story? And am I attributing something to Allah or His Messenger ๏ทบ without proof?
๐ Allah warns, โDo not pursue that of which you have no knowledgeโ
Quran 17:36
๐ Allah says: โDo not say about Allah what you do not knowโ
Quran 7:33
Therefore, if something cannot be established, do not present it as Islamic fact. Not every religious story is authentic, not every narration is sahih, not every popular name is established by revelation, and not every detail about the unseen belongs to Aqeedah. When the subject is Allah, His Names and Attributes, His angels, His Prophets, the unseen, the Hereafter, or any matter of Aqeedah, proof must come before storytelling. Our religion does not need fabricated stories to make it powerful. The Quran and authentic Sunnah are sufficient. Verify before you believe, verify before you teach, verify before you share, and when you do not know, say: Allah knows best.
