Local Charity Family Matters Baby Bank Appeals for Sponsors to Fund Stair Gates

Family Matters Baby Bank has launched an urgent appeal for donations to help fund essential stair gates for families in need across the local community.

Stair gates are one of the most frequently requested safety items provided by the charity, playing a crucial role in protecting young children and preventing accidents in the home. Due to increasing demand, the cost of purchasing new stair gates is becoming unsustainable.

Family Matters Baby Bank has recently bought four new stair gates, but there are currently six more families on the waiting list who are still in need of this vital safety equipment.

Each stair gate costs ÂŁ20, and the charity is now asking local residents, community groups and businesses to consider sponsoring a stair gate to help meet demand.

A spokesperson for Family Matters Baby Bank said:
“Stair gates may seem like a small item, but they make a huge difference to family safety. With demand continuing to rise, we are asking for support to ensure no family is left waiting.”

Anyone willing to help can sponsor a stair gate for ÂŁ20. Further information on how to donate can be found on the campaign poster or by contacting Family Matters Baby Bank directly.

Dorset Council Backs Phone-Free School Days to Help Children Focus and Stay Safe

Dorset Council has published new guidance encouraging schools to introduce phone-free school days, aiming to improve children’s focus, wellbeing and safety.

The guidance, developed in partnership with school leaders, young people and the Dorset Education Board, supports schools in prohibiting mobile phone use during the school day as part of their behaviour policies. It also promotes smartphone-free environments in first and primary schools, while sharing best practice from middle and secondary schools that already restrict phone use for pupils in Key Stages 2 and 3.

Recognising that much smartphone use happens outside school hours, the Council is also encouraging families to delay giving children a smartphone until at least the age of 14, unless there is a specific need. For parents who want their child to be contactable on journeys to and from school, the guidance recommends basic “brick” phones without internet access.

The Council has stressed that schools should continue to make reasonable adjustments for pupils with medical needs, safeguarding concerns or caring responsibilities.

Cllr Clare Sutton, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Education and Skills, said:
“Phones can be great tools for adults, but in school they’re often a distraction and a source of harm. A clear, consistent approach makes classrooms calmer and learning stronger, and it gives children space to socialise face-to-face.
We’ll back schools to implement phone-free days and we’ll help families with practical steps at home, so children can focus, feel safe and thrive.”

The guidance promotes a whole-community approach, encouraging schools to clearly communicate policies to pupils and parents, provide education around digital literacy and responsible use, and offer practical support where needed. This includes working with partners such as bus companies where changes may affect travel routines.

Support for families

For children who already have smartphones, Dorset Council recommends the use of parental controls and safer SIM options. Families will also be able to access further advice at a Spring Term 2026 parent event, featuring Smartphone Free Childhood and local professionals. Further details will be shared in due course.

Family Wassail Returns to Radipole Park and Gardens

Families and friends are being invited to celebrate the turning of the seasons at Radipole Park and Gardens, with a traditional Family Wassail taking place in just a few days’ time.

The event will begin at 2pm at Mumma Bee’s Café, where Friends of Radipole Park and Gardens will be joined by Friends of Tumbledown to host a relaxed and creative start to the afternoon. Visitors of all ages can take part in making nature-based headwear, using natural materials inspired by the landscape, before settling in to hear the story of the Wassail and learn about its rich history and customs.

At 2.50pm, the atmosphere will shift as music signals the procession to the Community Orchard. The air will be filled with song as participants walk together, led by the uplifting voices of the Harmonics Choir and Island Voices.

In the orchard, the Wassail will continue with communal singing and dancing, celebrating nature, community and the age-old tradition of blessing the trees for a healthy year ahead. The event is designed to be welcoming, family-friendly and rooted in seasonal folklore, offering a chance to connect with both nature and neighbours.

Everyone is encouraged to join in, dress warmly, and take part in this joyful midwinter tradition set in one of Weymouth’s much-loved green spaces.
