If you complain about "bad smells" at a Living History Event, then it's probably the portals! Back in Victorian Britain, it was the River Thames that was the problem!

In the summer of 1858, London was gripped by an unbearable stench as the River Thames became overwhelmed with untreated human waste, intensified by unusually hot weather. The foul odor was so overpowering that it disrupted daily life, with sheets soaked in chloride of lime hung across the windows of Parliament in a desperate attempt to mask the smell.

The crisis, known as the Great Stink, highlighted the city’s inadequate sanitation system and the severe public health risks it posed. Outbreaks of cholera and other waterborne diseases had already plagued London, and the stench made it impossible for lawmakers to ignore the urgent need for reform. The event became a turning point in how urban centers addressed sanitation and public health.

In response, civil engineer Joseph Bazalgette was tasked with designing a modern sewer network. His system, completed in the 1860s, diverted waste away from the Thames and dramatically improved living conditions. Remarkably, much of Bazalgette’s infrastructure remains in use today.
