I put EGG BOXES on the studio ceiling! NEEDS MUST...

Egg Boxes on the Ceiling - It doesn't need to be perfect - It just needs to do the job!

When I launched a not-for-profit community radio station, there was nothing. No premises. No money. No equipment.

But there was a license. And there was me.

So I did it Challenge Annika-style.
👉 I gathered volunteers
👉 Applied for grants
👉 Begged and borrowed everything I could

Local people painted walls. Plasterers donated time. Builders who’d helped at recent local floods came to lend a hand.

And when we needed soundproofing?

I put out a call for egg boxes... a local lady was delighted to get the space in her shed back after her husband stored them there!

They are the exact shape of the foam soundproofing you can buy.. perfect!

We covered the studio ceiling with them. And they stayed there until I left.

That station went on to win multiple national awards.

💡 Lesson? You don’t need the “perfect” setup.

Who remembers the Osmonds?
I found one once in the car park!

One winter’s day, I was wandering outside my radio studio in Lancashire, wrapped up and wearing a woolly hat, cheeks red from the cold. Definitely not looking my most glamorous.

And then I spotted him. One of the Osmond brothers... it was Jay!

He’d been at a local venue, The Grand, checking it out for their UK tour the following year.

I plucked up the courage and asked: “Would you come in for a quick live radio interview?”

To my amazement, he said yes.

Cue me racing back inside, dragging every Osmonds track I could into the next hour’s playlist, still looking like a festive elf, heart pounding... I'd grown up with them!

When he arrived, I decided to keep it simple. No big contrived questions. Just a chat.

At the end, he said: “Kath, that’s one of the best interviews I’ve ever had.”

Lesson for podcasters? You don’t need to be polished or scripted to create magic.
✔️ Be curious
✔️ Be spontaneous
✔️ Be human

I found the interview today and I listened to it.. I blooming loved it!
(let me know if you want the audio because I ask him his fav track ever from 200 albums and I had the exact one lined up to play next.. after I asked him.. genius).
