They are often overlooked, yet a pivotal component across multiple industries and technologies. Waveguides are the arteries of systems that use electromagnetic waves. Imagine that you are at one end of a hallway and you shout. The hallway walls ensure that your voice travels in the same direction and reaches the end of the hallway. Essentially, this is what a waveguide does.

Waveguides are specialised structures that direct electromagnetic waves from one point to another. They ensure minimal signal loss at high frequencies, making them ideal for the transmission end of satellite uplinks and downlinks, as well as being widely used for radar applications.

In our latest blog post, we deep dive into what they are, why they are important, and when you would use one.

Our R&D Engineering Manager, Gavin Cox, joined the latest Satcoms Innovation Group podcast to discuss STEM, talent acquisition, and the industry skills gap. Gavin is a passionate advocate of engaging the next generation, something he does with secondary schools, science fairs, and mentoring early stage career professionals.

Together with Jack Brown of the University of Birmingham, ST Engineering iDirect's Dave Davis, Chris Dix at Babcock, and SIG's Helen Weedon, Gavin discussed the talent gap and how we can work together to resolve it.

According to Gavin, one of the biggest skills missing in young people entering the industry is around radio frequency (RF). As he highlights, with many RF experts at the back end of their careers, we are going to have a vacuum to fill in the coming years, so we need to be filling that now as we see it coming.

In terms of people wanting to become satcoms engineers, he said the most important aspect is having that engineering mindset to look at something, analyze a problem, try and draw conclusions from it, and then extrapolate from that.
