From flat to finished - the magic of colour grading ๐Ÿ“น

The video below shows some before and after examples of colour grading.

The footage captured in camera is dull, flat and lifeless.

But this is done on purpose.

Itโ€™s the cameras way of retaining as much information and data from the scene as possible.

It helps protect the highlights, shadows and most importantly the skin tones.

Colour grading will then bring the footage to life.

It allows us to pull all that data from the foorage and make it pop.

A lot of people are surprised how raw footage looks.

What do you think of the transformation?

๐ŸŽฅ New Video Production Work ๐ŸŽฅ

Here is a video we recently put together for GMS Services Ltd in Wigan, capturing all the fun of the recent away day they put on for their staff.

It was located at Bispham Hall Scout Estate over in Wigan.

We have captured one of their previous days like this and there is always a lot of fun activities on offer. This time though, we wanted to do things slightly differently.

We wanted to capture staff interviews throughout the day to accompany the visuals.

The goal for the video was to show what it is like working for GMS directly from the staff themselves.

We also captured interviews with the directors to discover why they book days like this for the staff and key benefits that everyone can take away from them.

Thank you to Gemma & Carl for bringing us on board again and trusting us to produce this work for them.

If you like the video, grealty we would appreciate if you would like, comment or share.

Video was shot on Sony FX3 using the Sony 85mm lens.

Some interview screens from a recent shoot with the guys from GMS Services Ltd

We were over at Bispham Hall Scout Estate in Wigan capturing all the action that unfolded from their away day.

They took part in some great activities and a lot of fun was had by everybody.

We also managed to capture some short, to the point interviews that encapsulated the staffs thoughts of the company.

Look forward to releasing this in the next week or so.

Here are a couple of stills from The Lowry in Manchester just before Christmas.

We collaborated with Northern Heart Films to carry out a couple of interviews at Lightwaves Salford.

The interviews will be part of a couple of short films that they are putting together.

Was good to collaborate will fellow local creatives.

Looking forward to seeing how the final films turn out.

It's been a whole year since filming commenced on our short film Coming Home.

This short film shares the story of Sarah Dearden Art, an artist from Lancashire.

Sarah found her passion of creativity early, but later started to struggle with her mental health and had to endure some really dark moments.

Creativity was her light at the end of the tunnel.

She now offers creative services to others to help improve mental health and build confidence.

If you haven't already seen it, I would appreciate if you could watch and leave a comment with what you thought.

Thank you

At The Lowry tonight conducting interviews for Northern Heart Films and Light Up the North.

These interviews will be featured in a couple of short films to promote the light festivals and artists.

Be fun to see how the edits come out.

This is most common interview style in video ๐ŸŽฅ

The person on camera is looking slightly off centre talking to someone behind the camera

Itโ€™s very popular on TV and documentaries.

But why?

It makes people feel at ease.

Staring straight into a lens talking is quite intense.

If you have ever tried it, you will know what I mean.

Instead of someone having a conversation with a camera, they are having a conversation with a real person.

It can help them forget about the camera and the lights.

This way the conversation flows more naturally.

It allows them to open up and be honest and vulnerable.

This is where the magic occurs and we get those precious gems of information.

An important part of the video planning process is finding reference shots.

They help us visualise how we want our video to look.

When first planning a project, it all starts with an idea in the mind.

We have nothing solid to work off.

Thatโ€™s where pre-production comes in to play.

Part of this process includes finding reference shots.

These can help us plan the camera angle, lens choice, lighting setup and much more.

Most importantly, they can help us visualise the mood we want capture.

The mood helps determine the emotions we can bring out of the viewer.

This video shows the reference image that we worked off, the interview setup and the final shot achieved.

How to create a promo video for your business that connects.

(Even if it's your first video)

Weather you're buying the filming equipment yourself or hiring someone to produce the video, you need to know how much you want to spend.

Try and stick to this, pockets are only so deep.

๐—š๐—ผ๐—ฎ๐—น๐˜€
This will determine the primary focus of the video. Do you want to drive sales, raise brand awareness or promote a new product/service?

Depending on what you want to achieve, the video may need to be approached in a different way.

Identify your target audience and speak to their pain points. Focus on the problem and the needs of your audience that your business can help solve.

Think about the emotions you want to evoke - trust, excitement, happiness etc.

People connect better with stories than just raw information. Tell the audience your story. Why you got started, what keeps you going and how you want to help people.

Highlight a pain point that your customers face, show them your solution to this, then showcase a transformation of how you have helped.

You need to engage the viewer with high quality visuals. Stick to your budget on this one. Equipment is becoming cheaper these days. Try to use a camera that captures 4K footage. This will give you more flexibility later on.

Don't forget the audio. This is often an afterthought, but is just as important as the visuals. Choose music that aligns with your brand and make sure any vocals are crisp and clear.

Will the video be posted on your website, or is it mainly for social media? Answering this question will help you during the filming process.

If your video will be posted to a website, Youtube or Linkedin, you may want to film the video horizontally so it best fits with the platform.

If the video is mainly for Instagram or TikTok, then you probably want a vertical video.

Think about this during the planning process.

After the video is finished, tell the viewer what you want them to do.

Do you want them to sign up to a newsletter, visit a products/services page to purchase something, or do you want them to follow you on social media?

Let them know

There can be a lot more strategy involved in planning promotional videos, but these points should help in the beginning.

We hope you all found this post useful. If you did, let us know in the comments.

This one tip improves all of our videos ๐ŸŽฅ

Including foreground in the shots.

Our focus on making videos, is keeping the viewer engaged.

One way to do this is to make the shots interesting.

By placing something between the camera and the subject, we can make things more dynamic.

Foreground could be a building, a person, a tree, the list is endless.

Movies and TV shows do this quite often.

It can make a boring shot come to life.

It can also help draw the viewers eye to an important part of the scene.

The world revolves around PEOPLE

The products we use are designed by people.

The shops we visit are run by people.

People are so important.

If you make any video content for your business, I think itโ€™s important to showcase people.

Show your employees and tell their unique stories.

Show you customers and how your business helps them and makes them happier.

People are our favourite thing to shoot.

The most compelling stories usually come from the people you would least expect.
