What is special about living in Greater Manchester?

It's not every day we get to tackle a project at Northern Heart that asks a question we can genuinely explore as residents of Greater Manchester.

Being based right here in Wigan it was a chance to dive deep into a question close to our own hearts.

Last week marked the launch of the Greater Manchester Strategy, and alongside it, we proudly unveiled our latest piece of work.

This short film is a bit of a love letter to everything that makes Greater Manchester shine.

Last night, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority Greater Manchester Strategy officially launched, and we at Northern Heart are incredibly proud to have led the vast majority of its creative delivery! 🚀

We crafted a short film to be the centrepiece of the launch and teamed up with the brilliant photographer Keith Vaughton to capture a diverse range of everyday people across Greater Manchester.

Even Mayor Andy Burnham loved the film, saying our team did Manchester proud! What a night!

Yesterday evening Northern Heart had the pleasure of welcoming filmmakers from all three years of our Northern Doc Fund for a fantastic masterclass.

It was a truly insightful session, focusing on how to forge a successful career in the independent documentary space.

We were really pleased to have filmmaker Brett Chapman lead the workshop.

We've admired Brett's work for a few years now, and it was brilliant to finally get this arranged. His unapologetically Northern perspective and story of building a career primarily based in Yorkshire was incredibly inspiring for our cohort of filmmakers.

This masterclass is just the start! We're excited to continue offering these valuable sessions going forward as we grow our Northern Doc Fund.

It's been about a week since we turned up for the opening night film at Sheffield DocFest, and what a week it was!

Not only did we attend the festival this year to watch some amazing films and catch up with familiar faces over in Yorkshire, but we also hosted a special event to celebrate the ongoing success of our Northern Doc Fund.

We had a fantastic turnout, especially when you consider the incredible programme of events throughout the week at DocFest.

It was so lovely, and hugely unexpected, to capture some wonderful testimonies from industry leaders championing the work we're doing at Northern Heart and our Doc Fund.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, to everyone who attended! Your presence and support means a great deal to all of us at Northern Heart.

We truly feel seen, accepted, and supported by the wider documentary community. We'll certainly keep trying to grow the Doc Fund and support new filmmakers to honour your trust!

We had a truly wonderful morning today at Winstanley College! We ran a Documentary Interviewing workshop with their talented year one T Level students.

A massive thank you to the incredible Joy France, the battle rapping granny who was the star of our film Joy Uncensored, for joining us and sharing her invaluable insights. She was absolutely brilliant with the students!

Every single student did an outstanding job, and it's clear that Winstanley College is doing an excellent job preparing these budding filmmakers for a long and successful career in the industry.

We loved seeing their passion and talent!

Last Friday, we said goodbye to an incredible man we were deeply privileged to have met.

Filming Alan's story for our film, 'Finding 'Appiness,' had a profound impact on the direction our work at Northern Heart has taken. Without him, it's truly likely Northern Heart wouldn't be what it is today.

Many of you who follow us will know Alan from the film. This message is to let you know that Alan has found some peace.

Huge congrats to the amazing winners of the 2025 Northern Doc Fund!

5 talented filmmakers spent the afternoon in Lancaster sharing their pitches.

The judges really took their time chatting and figuring out the winners after a long session and some tough decisions. 

Everyone on the judging panel saw something special in all the filmmakers. Each one brought something totally different to the theme and really showed why they needed the fund.

The winners this year are -

We were in , at St. George's Hall this week attending the BBC Children's Commissioning Briefing Day.

As our time supported by the BBC Small Indie Fund comes to a close it was nice to get a sense of where BBC Children's is heading over the next 2 to 3 years, and what they are looking to commission.

It was also great to see get plenty of attention thanks to the presence of Hacker T Dog, who was the co host of the event!

You can just about make him out on the balcony 🤣
