Nautor’s ClubSwan one-design racing division has forged a powerful new partnership with one of the leading America’s Cup teams and for the first time ever they’ve tooled up to build Swans overseas – in Pensacola, Florida

When you’ve got a great new boat with a unique feature and it’s doing quite well as a one-design class in the Mediterranean, the next step in growing the class is to replicate that initial success in another key market. That’s what Nautor Swan is doing with the latest and smallest design in its fleet, the ClubSwan 28. But to launch a whole new one-design circuit in the United States at the same time as a brand new boat, you’re going to need a great local partner with deep knowledge of the US yacht racing scene. And they don’t come much greater than American Magic.

Here’s a compelling concept: ice class hull strength and ultimate reliability combined with planing performance and obsessive attention to detail

The main challenge was to create a light boat,’ says Ivars Linbergs, a Latvian master boatbuilder and one of three shareholders in Pure Yachts, a new aluminium boatbuilding company based in Kiel, Germany. The other shareholders are Pure Yachts’ founder Matthias Schernikau and performance optimisation specialist Urs Kohler.

Persico Marine has been hitting the headlines recently. In last year’s America’s Cup, you’ll have noticed the company’s name proudly emblazoned on the deck of the impossibly sleek Luna Rossa but you may not know that Persico built no fewer than four of the Imocas in the last Vendée Globe.

Most recently, the big noise has surrounded two new Persicobranded yachts, both with electric propulsion. One is the Verdierdesigned 100ft (30.48m) performance cruiser Magic Carpet e, delivered late last year. The other is the 72ft (21.95m) catamaran Extreme H2O, a Swiss army knife of a multihull designed by Morelli & Melvin with 23ft (7m) righting moment foils, daggerboards and rudders with elevators. Currently being sea-trialled by American Magic, she is rumoured to be capable of 26kts upwind and 40kts down, flying eight inches (20cm) above the water.

Ferdinand van West, project lead designer at Morrelli & Melvin Design & Engineering Inc. takes us through the naval architecture of Extreme H20, the PB72, a semi-foiling offshore machine.

Every now and then, a yacht begins not with a design brief, but with a question. In the case of the PB72, it started in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. During the 2015 Transpac Race, a legendary offshore sprint from Los Angeles to Honolulu, known for its fast passages and trade wind surfing. But for Patrick Benz, owner and sailor of a Gunboat 66, that particular race became more than just a performance benchmark. That race, and the hundreds of hours of performance sailing that preceded it, planted a vision in Pat’s mind – one that would evolve into one of the most technically ambitious multihulls we've ever developed at Morrelli & Melvin.
