Valentyna, 64, Ukrainian

Valentyna's sitting on a donated sofa in a derelict four room house. It's on the edge of a small village not far from Odessa. She's been living here with ten other family members for about six months.

There's no heating or running water inside, the windows are broken, and they've been given clothes and bedding by neighbours.

She's here because her childhood home in Lysychansk, eastern Ukraine, was bombed last year, and she lost everything. Fortunately she was in a shelter when her house was hit.

"Not even a needle and thread could be rescued," she says.

Since then she's been homeless, travelling with her son, her daughter-in-law, and her 8 grandchildren. They've been moving west across Ukraine in search of somewhere safer to live.

But even their current poor accommodation won't last much longer - she's just been told they must move out.

"I can't sleep worrying about where we're going to live" she says. "I just want to feel calm."

Her home might have been destroyed but her connection to the area she lived in her whole life is unbroken. She's desperate to return to Lysychansk.

"When the war is over I want to to back to the place I grew up in," she says resolutely.

*******

Valentyna was dealing with an overwhelming number of issues when I met her, mainly due to the lack of stable accommodation, but I was struck by her incredible dignity and determination in the face of her traumas.

The pull of going back to Lysychansk was very strong for her. Home has never been a location for me, but I wonder if I was forced to move because of war if I'd feel differently. I suspect I might.

Do you feel home is a specific place? A building? A location? Or even region?

Hello and welcome HOME! I’m starting a personal photography project exploring what home means to different people. I’m fascinated by how a home is a fundamental human need, but that it means something different to each of us.

I’m a bit nervous about sharing this so publicly. I can shoot videos, but I’m not so confident with photography. But the idea has been gnawing away at me for ages, so I’ve decided it’s time to put it out there.

As a kid, I moved a lot. By the time I was 18 I’d lived in three countries, moved six times, and been to 11 schools. I was really good at packing and making new friends. Home wasn’t a place or a house, it was wherever my family were living at the time.

Recently I’ve been profoundly affected by the stories of people and their connections to home while working with homeless charities, refugees, migrants, and internally displaced people.

So, I’ll be collecting stories and photographs about what home means for different people from as many backgrounds, countries, places, and spaces as I can.

I want to speak to travellers, people who’ve never left home, nomads, people with multiple homes, people with no homes, renters, owners, folks here in the UK, and others all around the globe....all sorts!! I’m open to ideas if you want to suggest anyone.

I’m starting this project with no goal other than to find interesting stories and share them.

I want to gain a better understanding of what home means to different people, and bring you along if you’re interested.

I've got some great posts coming soon, but in the meantime I'd love to know what home means to you…

Hello! I’ve been away for a bit, so I thought it was time to re-introduce myself and share some info!

I used to work as a video journalist for the BBC, but now I create brand videos for businesses and teach people how to make their own awesome films.

My passion is showing you how to use what you’ve got to make videos. You do not need expensive gear! Your phone can do amazing things, if you know how to use it properly!

Learning how to make videos changed my life, because it showed me a way to bring stories to people that made an impact. 💥

So my reason for being on here is to share my love of video with you, so you can impact your people too.

Ok, so here are 5 completely random things you probably don’t know about me:

🤸‍♀️ I competed at trampolining at university. I could do back flips and everything.

📺 I used to read local BBC news on TV. That feeling of going live was always gut-wrenching.

📚 I went to 11 schools. No, I wasn’t expelled! I just moved around a lot as a kid.

🚘 One of my first jobs was working as an event manager at Ford car shows. I had NO idea what I was doing!

🍕 My favourite food is pizza. Roasted veg + feta please. It would be my last meal.

Ok, so tell me something random about you I wouldn’t know from your feed!

❤️ You’re willing to let imposter syndrome GO! That voice telling you that you can’t make videos? It’s got to go. We all hear it, but don’t let it decide your future. You’ll get your own personal cheerleading squad of fellow video students to support you if you join.

📱You’re ready to COMMIT to video. You know it makes a difference, but you’re not sure how to move forward. This course doesn’t just give you knowledge, you get access to a space where you can ask questions, grow and learn with confidence.

When I ran my Mobile Video Academy course last year I gave a place away to the marketing manager of a lovely local charity that’s very close to my heart.

I really believe in the power of video to help you tell stories and share what you do, so this year, and I’d like to offer another FREE place to someone else. I thought I’d open up submissions here.

So if you (or someone you know) works for a registered charity, and you’d like to learn how to make better videos on your mobile to tell people about what you do, please leave me a comment below. Tell me a little about who you are, what you do, and the charity you’re connected to.

Please feel free to share and / or tag anyone you think might be interested. I’ll pull someone out of a digital hat live on Weds at midday!

If you’d like to find out more about the Mobile Video Academy and if it’s right for you, click the link in my bio.

Turns out captions aren’t just useful for the first 15 seconds of your video to get attention. They actually increase your watch time.⏰

I’ll admit, captions can be a pain to add. For some lucky people, Instagram will automatically generate captions for your IGTV videos (I’m still waiting for this feature!)

If you don’t have that function yet, there are apps that can help: Clipomatic (iPhone) or AutoCap (android) will auto-generate subtitles for you.

Personally, I prefer to DIY it and use an app like .app to add text to my videos. Here's a tip: save your thumbs and voice record the captions, it’s way faster!

Do you caption?! ✍🏼

A few days ago my youngest daughter, wearing a chocolate splattered white frilly dress, her face covered with traces of lunch, hair all over the place, looked herself up and down in the mirror and said these words.

What a rockstar. I told her I agreed, gave her a massive cuddle, and wondered: when do we stop speaking to ourselves like this?

This doesn’t have anything to do with video, but it does have something to do with confidence, and being ok with who you see looking back at you in a mirror, or on a screen.

I’m talking about getting on camera with my Mobile Video course crew later this week, and we’ll be chatting about mindset. So read and repeat if you need this today. Or everyday!

I might get this made into a print for my office. 🤔 Got any kid phrases that have just floored you…?! I love their zero-filter between brain and mouth. Tell me your fave...

These magic words are from the lovely Daisy from . At the end of last year, she launched a market, an actual real-life market, for talented makers who wanted a place to sell their work. It was a massive hit, but then we went into lockdown.

I can’t imagine a business that’s less online than a market place - you’re walking around, looking at stalls, speaking to sellers, picking stuff up, enjoying the vibe - but Daisy and her sister Liv dived into video and saw it transform their business. 🎬

They now run awesome virtual markets for sellers around the UK. It’s done so well Daisy has quit her job to run the market full time. 🎉

I want to help you use video to transform your business too. Just hitting record isn’t enough. Knowing how to plan, shoot and edit videos properly makes a massive difference to the content you create and its impact.📱

My 4-week course, the Mobile Video Academy, can help. It’s starting Mon 2nd Nov and will take you through everything you need to make professional videos with your phone.

To join now, click the link in my bio (subscribers get a BIG discount, so DM me if you want to become one!) 💌

I’d love to welcome you on board, and help you sprinkle a bit of magic dust on your business. ✨ If you’ve got any questions, let me know in the comments or send me a DM.
