Clubs make surprise decision about next summer at heated AGM night.

Hampshire tennis clubs made a surprise decision about how to handle next summer's heat during an evening of lively (and sometimes lengthy) debate at the Annual General Meetings for the Southampton LTA and the Apsley League on Wednesday, December 3.

For those who value an efficient evening, things started with promise when the first AGM - for the Southampton LTA - was done and dusted in less than 50 minutes - even after a passionate discussion about competition balls that had some club representatives up on their feet by the end.

But temperatures soon rose at the Apsley AGM, when the topic of how to manage heat alerts opened up for full debate. Discussion on when and how captains can decide to suspend play on very hot summer days carried on for around 30 minutes, stretching the end of the AGM to just past 930pm. The discussion was so long, and so heated, that the AGM ended up adopting a surprise decision about what to do if temperatures surge again next year.
We'll discuss what was decided and how things ended up there on this week's show!

Annual General Meetings are a highlight on any tennis club calendar. Typically AGMs focus on development plans for clubs, membership trends, the election of members to various volunteer posts and -- importantly -- membership fee changes.

No every club has an AGM. Most notably, there is no such meeting for members at David Lloyd clubs, a playing location for a huge number of players in Hampshire. That's because those core questions, especially fees, are decided by the owners, not the members. Similarly, tennis clubs operated under local authorities like Riverside in Wi******er tend not to have their own AGMs.

This week we'll go a bit deeper on AGMs, so here's a selection of club AGM dates. Not all of them are at the end of the year - it turns out that quite a few happen in the middle of the year!

What crazy decisions do you make when you're under pressure in tennis?

France's Corentin Moutet turned from tennis genius to tennis clown when he chose to go for a between-the-legs, reverse half-volley on an otherwise easy shot against Belgium's Raphael Collignon in the quarter finals of the Davis Cup last week. Moutet missed the shot - one that he pulls of regularly in tournaments - and went on to lose the match from a winning position. The match ended 2-6, 7-5, 7-5, with Collignon the winner for Belgium. The decision not to take the easy point was the pivotal moment.

France was eliminated from the Davis Cup, and Moutet's teammates have given him a cold shoulder since then. Moutet has been asked many times sincethen why he chose to go for such a risky shot on an important point for his team.

"I think that the stress, the tension of the match, the emotion, that’s how I expressed it,” he said in a news conference. β€œI was tight on this game. So I think that’s why I did it."

So what do you do that annoys your teammates and partners, or even yourself, when the pressure closes in?

Congratulations from the Tennis Hampshire Podcast to Roger Federer on being voted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame! While it has widely been recognized as one of the least surprising awards of all time, Federer's recognition shouldn't pass us all by without some celebration.

The Swiss tennis player is regularly cited as an inspiration to tennis players across Hampshire. As Dick Moulds said in Episode 2.29: "He is so special as a person, and brought a lot to the game. The media tend to pick up on (power players like Andy Murray) but he didn't just have the grace and the ability that people like Federer had."

Those are thoughts about Federer that we regularly hear on the show from our guests from around the county. So we're confident that Hampshire's tennis players will join us in a big Well Done! Federer will join the hall of fame next August at an event in Newport, Rhode Island.

South Hants are the club blazing the trail in the Southampton LTA's Mixed Doubles leagues. Their A team holds the lead in the Second Division, while their B team is top of the third division. There's plenty of tennis still to play, but after such a bright start, they could be forgiven for thinking of double promotion glory already.

Division One is a classic race between Thornden and Riverside, as both A teams hold four points apiece after winning all of their opening fixtures. They meet this weekend - is a tie on the cards? Thornden have the slightly better record, having won all their rubbers as well, so they have the edge going into the show down.

Waterside A are cruising in Division Three as things stand, having won three fixtures handily - although one of those was against Waterside B. Totton & Eling B are enjoying life in Division Five, with three wins from three fixtures there as well.

Kingsgate B have only played one fixture in Division Six, but the win they took from that one leaves them at the top of the four-team group.
