It was a weekend of surprised and upsets across the Apsley League on August 15-16, as the away teams won at least five of the eight fixtures played. We're still waiting for one result to come in.

The upsets came in the form of brilliant wins for Swanmore A in the Premier Division and South Hants B in Division Three. Swanmore, which has had a tough summer so far, picked up their first points with a 5-3 win at home against Bassett B. Bassett are a top-half team in the elite division, making the win all the more impressive. With two winnable fixtures left to play, Swanmore could move on to put their five losses behind them.

South Hants B were jut as impressive in Division Three, making the trip to Lyndhurst - one of the toughest away ties in the leagues - and coming back with a 5-3 win that blows the title chase wide open in their division. Lyndhurst had been in cruise control with a 5-1 win-loss record, sitting comfortably at the top of the division. South Hants' smash and grab means they will move level with Lyndhurst on points - and they have an extra fixture in hand!

Elsewhere Thornden B pulled off a vital 5-3 Division One win away at Twyford A, giving them the upper hand in the contest to join Wi******er in going up to the Premier Division next summer. Thornden A in the Premier and Wellow B in Division Four also got expected wins to sit atop their respective divisions with perfect records.

There were no draws across any of the 14 fixtures played in the Apsley League over the weekend, and teams at home won ten of the contests played.

As expected, the most intense competition was Saturday's five chillis show down between Riverside B and Twyford B, which Riverside narrowly took 5-3 -- a result that makes them clear favourites to go on and win Div 2 as champions now. Twyford pushed them all the way, forcing 167 games to be played, the most intense fixture this summer so far measured by number of games played. Riverside B had only dropped two rubbers in their previous five fixtures.

Wellow B managed to get two wins from their double-feature weekend, beating Colden Common 5-1 on Saturday and Glebian 7-1 on Sunday. Two rubbers are missing from the Colden Common result, but with the score as it is Wellow bags the win no matter which side forfeited the missing rubbers. Wellow B surge to second place in Div 4 thanks to those wins.

And it was a bit of a disappointing showing in the elite divisions, where Lee on Solent, Kingsgate A and South Hants A only brought partials teams on the road to face Thornden A, Warsash A and Wi******er A. The home teams won all three very easily, 8-0 wins in each case. Must be that time of the summer where some teams throw in the towel, especially for away fixtures, and with holiday season at its peak.
