Have you recently discovered Wi******er Radio?...Or been aware of us for a while? Here's more info on our charity service to the community - which is all lovingly delivered every day by a small, merry band of committed and caring volunteers...

Run by an intergenerational team, aged from 18 to 81, Wi******er Radio is a volunteer-led, community-driven, dementia-friendly charity dedicated to supporting the older generation, taking an holistic approach to positive ageing, reducing loneliness, and improving health, especially amongst the socially-isolated and digitally-excluded. Volunteers provide the 24/7/365 community radio service for Wi******er area including local news; and hospital radio and ward visits to patients at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital, bringing comfort and keeping listeners connected since we started with our hospital radio service on 24th September 1984. And we are the Ofcom-licensed community radio station for the Wi******er and immediately surrounding parts of mid-Hampshire, since launching our community radio service on 24th March 2019. 🎶📻🎵🎧❤️

On this week's 'Wi******er Now', we're out at Littleton and Harestock Show , a wonderful, annual community event, running for over a hundred years! Wi******er Radio's Mary Blaxland speaks to organisers and attendees...Plus Wi******er Radio's Becky Frew chats to JJ Health-Caldwell from Wi******er Rotary UK about this year's Clarendon Marathon - a not-for-profit, fun community event taking place on Sun 4th Oct, with running options for 5 miles, relay team, half-marathon and full-marathon. Plus we have Community ShoutOuts and our regular round-up of news-in-brief to share with you too.

A blast from the past!...Pictured are our Wi******er Radio volunteers at last year's Wi******er Rotary UK Clarendon Marathon - a wonderful annual not-for-profit community event. Next one coming up soon: Sun 4 Oct! Still time to enter, OR offer your time as a volunteer-marshal to help on the day. Event only possible through the sterling efforts of the around 250 volunteers who help each year. If you are able to assist Rotary with a few hours over the weekend either beforehand on the Saturday with setting-up, or on the day as a marshal, get in touch with JJ at the club. Sometimes people don't always realise just how much time and effort is involved in running a 24/7/365 radio station for the community - and all this essential work at charity Wi******er Radio providing a local health and wellbeing station for older people, is carried out by a dedicated merry band of volunteers, including our Music Library team - here's two-thirds of them in this photo - the lovely Ray and Ron. The team met yesterday with third member, Anna, our Chair (who took the photo), for our regular bi-monthly Music Library review-meeting and get-together.

It's not just about having music knowledge - there's diligence, accuracy and computer literacy skills needed for these fulfilling volunteer roles. Much vital behind-the-scenes work is done each week - requiring people with technical ability who are confident and happy working off spreadsheets, managing databases, doing administration, and being focused and organised to meet specific project timelines and required seasonal deadlines through the year, plus of course vetting the music and following our processes to ensure our music is appropriate for our audience and suitable for broadcast on the radio station. Volunteers working for the good of the charity, and always with our audience, including patients at the RHCH, in mind. Lots of clinical evidence that listening to your favourite music is a welcome distraction from pain, and aids recovery.

Fantastic fun on Saturday - seeing and catching up with faces old and new, visiting our Wi******er Radio stall at the Littleton and Harestock Show!

BIG THANK YOU to the organisers who put so much time, love and effort into this wonderful community event - we really appreciate that Wi******er Radio was one of the 3 chosen charity beneficiaries this year. And BIG THANK YOU too, to all those who popped by for a chat, to share how our service had helped them, to make a donation to our charity, or to try their hand at reading the news! Lovely to meet you all.

Lots going on as usual around Wi******er...

Hear more about the proposal to develop the existing disused River Park Sport & Leisure Park site into a new Lido facility. We were at the final drop-in information event at the Guildhall yesterday and spoke to people about their views on the plans. Wi******er City Council 's Cabinet will meet on Wednesday 9 September, to make a decision on their preferred bidder for the site.

Kate has taken on a month-long running challenge to raise funds for Sail Team Adventure and help the team continue competing internationally, with the ultimate goal of buying their own boat. Throughout this month, Kate is completing a 5K run three times a week for four weeks — 12 runs and 60 kilometres in total — as part of her “5K for 5M” challenge. Last week's episode included more on this year's ******er Heritage Open Days. We spoke to Liz Wald from St Peter And The Wi******er Martyrs and Dr. Simon Roffey from the University of Wi******er about their involvement in historic talks and tours during the Festival (both those events are now fully booked, but you can join the waiting list). St. Peter's is also having an Open Afternoon on Saturday 12th September from 12noon to 4pm as part of this year's HODs, as the church celebrates its Centenary year this year, as a - no need to pre-book for the open afternoon - drop into the church anytime from 12-4.

A number of other local churches and historic buildings are running special events during the Festival between Friday 11th and Sunday 20th September. All events are gloriously FREE to attend! Due to space constraints or seat capacity, some events have a limited number of spaces available so you do need to pre-book your ticket. Online box office opened yesterday.
