Season 12 of SCUK is officially underway, and Division 1 wasted no time showing just how tough this year’s league is going to be. From the opening heat, every meeting carried real intensity as teams looked to make an early mark in what is shaping up to be a fiercely contested campaign.
THUNDER STRUCK BY WARRIORS
Wolverhampton Warriors made arguably the biggest statement of the first round, with a commanding 56-34 away victory over Coventry Thunder. The newly formed side impressed from top to bottom, taking control early and never allowing Coventry a route back into the meeting. Alex Plewa starred with a sensational 12-point maximum from his four heats, while Ivan Fominskyi scored 10+1 at reserve, and Zak Deacon added 9+1 in a dominant team display. Coventry battled hard through Konrad Telatyński’s excellent 14-point haul and Chris Sainsbury’s 8, but the Warriors’ strength throughout the side proved decisive.
Wolverhampton manager Ben Peach said: “To start the season like that as a new team was something special.
It was a brilliant night for the team, from Alex (Plewa) leading the team with a full maximum, to the reserve scoring 18+3 combined. I think it shows the league a statement of intent: when the team is 1-7, it’s a very strong outfit and a very tough team to beat.
We move on to Cardiff at home, where I hope the team can repeat it.”
Coventry Thunder 34: Konrad Telatyński 14, Chris Sainsbury 8, Owen Enefer 4+1, Neil Howlett 3, Alan Strzelczyk 2, Taz McDougall 2, Linus Jonasson 1

PANTHERS HOLD FIRM
Manchester Panthers also opened their season with a victory after edging out Midland Mavericks 47-41 in a closely fought encounter. The Panthers built their advantage early and managed to withstand strong pressure from the visitors throughout the meeting. Dominik Koziński led the scoring for Manchester with 10+2, supported strongly by Jędrek Janiszyn on 9+1 and Craig Stevens with 8+1. Midland Mavericks stayed competitive thanks to Sebastian Serwa’s superb 13-point return and guest, Dylan Geer, delivering 9 at reserve, but Manchester held firm in the closing heats.
Manchester manager James Capes said: “I was a little worried going into the meeting, just because, tell me someone who wouldn't be. The boys soon got rid of the worry when we banged in a 5-1 in heat 1.
The lads performed so well, and it’s nice to get the first win in the first meeting, and everyone got at least a 2nd place in the races. A few little glitches, but we will put it right and hopefully kick on for the rest of the season.”
Manchester Panthers 47: Dominik Koziński 10+2, Jędrek Janiszyn 9+1, Craig Stevens 8+1, Charlie Hitchins 8+3, Sam Leeson 6, Jakob Nylander 4+1, Tom Ridgway 2

CASTLES STAND TALL
Cardiff Castles delivered one of the most complete performances with a convincing 52-36 victory over Ipswich Bandits. The Castles controlled the meeting from the opening heats and steadily extended their advantage throughout the night. Mateusz Onik was sensational with 14, being pipped in heat 15 to deny a debut maximum, while Joel Björkman added 11+2 and Craig Hurle scored 8 in a superb all-round effort. Ipswich fought hard through Pawel Adamczak’s 9+1 and Ashley Hutchinson’s 8+1, but Cardiff’s consistency proved too strong.
Cardiff manager Joel Björkman said: “Extremely happy with the start, seeing the work pay off of the practice laps we put in the last few days as well, shows how capable we are at home, even with the late changes to the track.
A fun start for our debutants doing so well, especially Matuesz (Onik) and Craig (Hurle), who I hope can get the fun back with riding with us.”

Swindon remained competitive through Igor Pietras’ 10 and Artjoms Kusvinovs’ 7+1, but could not recover from Bradford’s strong run of heat advantages.
