Ferry Project

Ferry Project Helping the homeless with love and support towards independence since 1998 On entry to Ferry Project, individuals are assigned a key worker.

Established in 1998, Ferry project is an award winning social enterprise and registered charity that helps homeless people in fenland. The aim of the ferry project is not simply to provide accommodation, but to give people the skills they need to enable them to live independently. These include life skills such as cooking and cleaning, education courses, vocational training, volunteering and emplo

yment opportunities. We currently provide up to fifty bed spaces in Wisbech and engage with over three hundred clients per year. We are the largest provider for homelessness-related issues in the district, engaging with an estimated eighty percent of those who find themselves homeless in Fenland. "Ferry Project provides a short-term interaction in an individual’s life when they have an immediate need. Once we carry them to their destination, they move on.”
Keith Smith, Founder & Director of Ferry Project

Our clients include people with financial problems, people fleeing domestic violence, people recovering from a family breakdown or from drug and alcohol abuse, young people leaving the care system, those who have been sexually abused, ex-offenders and those with simply nowhere else to go. The key worker will work with the individual client to assess that person’s need and create an individual support plan with self-determined goals. These goals may include referrals to partner agencies, and getting back in touch with family and friends. Counselling and basic skills training are performed at the project’s headquarters, Octavia View, with additional educational courses provided at the Queen Mary Centre in Wisbech.

This morning we received a very kind donation from an amazing young lady called Lexi, who is only six years old. She popped in to the Ferry Project to drop of a huge donation of tolietries, baby snacks, wet wipes, colouring in books and even some special care packages for the mums in our mums and babies haven.

We mainly cater for homeless single adults, however, we do have a special haven of six units that is specially set aside for families, which Fenland District Council can refer families who have become homeless to. Currently we have five mums and five babies in residence.

Lexi had also written a note explaining that she had saved up her Birthday and Christmas money and wanted to use it to buy something to help the mums and babies who are currently experiencing homelessness. Her kindness is overwhelming and we think she is an absolute superstar!

Thank you Lexi - the mums and babies are very grateful.

On Tuesday, Ferry Project attended the Fenland Churches and Community Celebration held at March Centenary Baptist Church.

At the event the Gather Movement presented findings of a survey undertaken across the region that highlighted what work local churches were already engaging in within their communities and how much the local church in Fenland contributes to the voluntary sector as a whole.

The idea was to bring church leaders as well as civic partner organisations together to let each other know what was already being done, as well as to explore ways in which we could all work together for the benefit of our communities in the future.

Ferry Project shared about how the charity was birthed through church collaboration meeting a need in the Wisbech area for homelessness provision, and now how the charity is partnering with The King’s Church with Wisbech Donations Hub – a service that gives second-hand furniture and basic household items to those in need.

The event was attended by over 30 people and had addresses from various church leaders from around the region, Fenland District Council, NHS and Support Cambridgeshire.

Many relationships were forged and examples of good practice shared, which all began to build a collaborative momentum that could make a big impact for the better of those within our communities.
