"𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝘀𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗻𝗼, 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝘀𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝘂𝘀𝗵 𝗼𝗻."

When I moved to South Korea in 2013, I believed I could handle anything. I had already taught in Thailand and China. I had completed my master’s degree while building a department from scratch. 𝗜 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗲.

The truth was very different. I arrived in Korea exhausted in every sense of the word. My confidence was at an all time low. I was clinging to control in the classroom because I felt completely out of control inside. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗜 𝗽𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆.

Within weeks my anxiety was overwhelming. I could not sleep. My teaching felt hollow. The smallest mistakes felt catastrophic. One day, in a moment I will never forget, I asked my class if they had found the lesson boring. Almost every hand went up. 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗜 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗳𝘁.

Soon after, I found myself sitting in a hospital ward, sedated, confused and broken. I had experienced a full nervous breakdown. 𝗜 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹.

My body and mind finally forced me to stop. I𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝗜 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝗿 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴.
