Today is Halloween and dressing up is one of the highlights for many children (as well as lots of treats) so we are focusing on the safety of Halloween costumes 🎃🧙‍♂️🕷

Most Halloween dress ups are highly flammable which makes them a safety concern as our children are also around lit pumpkins and sometimes fireworks 🎆

Costumes are not manufactured to the same safety standards as every day clothes and will burn much quicker, try to buy costumes from a reputable supplier or even better get creative and make your own

On your outfits look for UKCA or a CE mark – this does not mean they wont still burn but it will be slower – the label should state that it has undergone additional flammability testing

Ideally have your child wear normal clothes under their costume so they have extra layers of protection for their skin and something giving them high visibility in the dark

The most important thing to teach our children in case of fire is STOP, DROP and ROLL

STOP where they are ✋
DROP to the ground and cover their face 🤦
ROLL around to put out the flames 🔥

Wherever possible use battery operated candles in pumpkins instead of flames (but keep the batteries away from small children) 🔋

One final safety, tip check those trick or treat bags for choking hazards like lollipops and marshmallows and save the eating until you’re safely home 🍭

⚠️Weaning Wednesday⚠️

Its getting into snuggly season and toasting marshmallows or cuddling up with a hot chocolate covered in gooey mini marshmallows........... but did you know?

🍬Marshmallows are a hazardous treat for young children🍬

Why❓

⛔️They can be easily sucked into the airway if the child laughs or talks whilst in the mouth as they are so light and airy

⛔️When they become wet they expand and become sticky - if they become lodged in the airway they may become difficult to get out

Ideally no marshmallows until your child is much older

Don't forget we have downloadable posters on our website with the choking manoeuvres on and we have regular face to face and online sessions to learn them - link in the comments

Do you have a child's birthday soon? - Autumn is actually the most popular time of year to be born!

With careful planning, parents and practitioners can throw a great birthday party, which everyone will enjoy. When they see children smiling and having fun, they will know that their efforts have been worthwhile.

If you are looking for a themed Toddler Sense® party, please do speak to Gemma or Rachel for details.

Toddlers build hand strength and coordination every time they play, explore, and take on mini challenges like brushing their teeth or pulling off their socks.

By pushing, pulling, carrying, and exploring, they’re not just having fun, they’re strengthening their shoulders, arms, and hands too.

We’ve put together some fun activity ideas that help toddlers to use their hands in various ways.

Today, on World Mental Health Day, I just want to remind everyone how important it is to talk about what we’re going through. You never really know what someone else might be carrying, so please — always be kind. 💚

I’m slowly starting to feel like me again. Some days are good, some are tough, but I’m learning to find my balance. And if you’re struggling right now, please hold on — it really does get better, even when it doesn’t feel like it will. 🌿

When these photos were taken, I was at one of the lowest points in my life. My mum had just passed away, my husband left me a week after her funeral, and the day before we said goodbye to her, I had to put my dog to sleep. I completely fell apart and ran away to Liverpool, where my big sister took me in. She made me feel safe, loved, and reminded me that there was still light ahead.

It’s been a long, hard journey to get to where I am now. I’m not completely okay — I still have ups and downs, and I still miss my parents — but I’m a world away from where I was. And that’s something I’m really proud of. 💛

Looking back at these photos, you’d never know how much pain I was hiding. A smile can hide everything. So please, always be gentle — with others and with yourself. You never know what someone else might be going through.

🍭Lollipops 🍭

Do you know the risk with lollipops? ⚠️

Packs of multiple lollipops will have a clear warning:

“Not suitable for under 36 months” but this can be missed on single lollipops ⛔️

Why are they dangerous?

Some lollipops will come off the stick easier than others and can then easily be sucked into the airway 🫁

Our advice is to stay clear of these suckers for as long as you possibly can! The advice is over 3 years old

Be ready for those times that your little one may be offered a lollipop from another adult!

For example, at the end of a meal at a restaurant, after a hair cut, in a party bag or Halloween 🎃

Have a safer option at the ready in your bag if possible 👜

Most importantly make sure you know how to perform the choking sequence, and CPR, which we teach in all our classes 🚑⛑🚨

Head to our website for free downloadable posters of the choking sequence
