Immortal - My Beautiful Teacher
I have tears running down my cheeks writing this; the photo is of my amazing little rescue Lusitano mare Immortal, Immy to her friends, just a day or so before I said goodbye to her aged just five in December 2018.
Immy came over from Portugal ‘accidentally’ at barely a year old. She was a bag of bones, had congenital cataracts in both eyes so could barely see. There is a long story to be told about her but my heart still breaks a year on from losing her so that is for another day. Her legacy is that she taught me so very much about being Mindful, something I thought I already was around my other horse Ari but she taught me to do so on a whole new level.
Being almost blind from birth, her other senses were incredibly heightened especially her response to your energy and intent. I had to refine my ability to lower my energy to reassure her when things were tough, to keep my mind calm and my focus and quiet intent on whatever it was we were doing and only that.
So maybe this page shouldn’t be called the Mindful Rider but the Mindful Partner as I never did get to ride my little angel. Whatever it is called, I owe so very much to my girl: she is indeed Immortal.
