As the school year begins, I've been asked by a lot of friends seeking guidance on WhatsApp for their children.

In Year 6, many primary schools witness a surge in students' phone usage, despite WhatsApp's minimum age requirement of 13. One common theme is the creation of class WhatsApp groups, which can lead to various issues such as:

- Being added to group chats without consent
- Feeling pressured to participate in discussions
- Oversharing personal information

It's essential to consider the digital world and the conversations children may be part of by allowing them access to WhatsApp. Talk to them regularly about using the platform responsibly, securely and mindfully. Assure them that they don't HAVE to be part of every discussion or respond to every message.

Go through the privacy settings to ensure they are configured to maximise their safety and to take the pressure off and have regular check through messages with your child to ensure all is well.

Back to school! Something to think about as our children return to school this week. Are you sharing too much? Don't forget once they're out there their digital footprint is established.

When I deliver social media awareness sessions to young people we talk about their digital footprint, are we as parents, also thinking about it?

A big day for many! Lots of hard work and determination will have gone into the opening of an email or envelope today. Well done to schools, students and their families!

Let's remember that hard work and determination will not necessarily mean gaining the highest grades, for some it's the fact they've got through those school years in whatever way they could.

I spent a fantastic Monday morning at Turves Green Boys Secondary School yesterday, part of the Matrix Academy Trust.

The boys in Year 7 were so attentive, engaged and funny! I enjoyed delivering the Positive Social sessions and the fact that a couple of boys asked when I would be back to deliver more sessions tells me they also found it valuable.

I've chosen just one of the 60 commitments that were made by the boys at the end of the session, as this particular boy was brave enough to share at the end of the session...

He hadn't thought of appearing offline whilst gaming & could see the value in it. A few weeks ago, he was playing FIFA with a teenager (so they said) who, when the youngrr boy won, got very aggressive, sweary & unpleasant. Thankfully the Year 7 boy blocked the older boy, but it obviously had an impact on him as it was visible when he shared his story.

This ☝🏻is why having an outside person talking to young people like social media and being safe is so valuable. They may open up more.

Now taking bookings for September onwards!

The theme of Safer Internet day, today - "Is it too good to be true?"

When I deliver Social Media Impact sessions for Positive Social, one of the questions I ask young people is "What are the negatives of Social Media?", the most popular answer being "getting scammed". It appears that young people are aware of the terminology...but I wonder if they are aware of being scammed in practice?

Later in the session we discuss how, maybe the people that they are conversing with online might not be;

* the age they say they are

* the s*x they say they are

* have the same interests as the young person they are talking too

A lot of the time they may say "I know they are my age because they told me", "I know they are my age because they know a lot about Roblox"...teaching our young people that (unfortunately) people will engage with them for negative purposes...to scam them (financially or emotionally) is so very important. If you do one thing today on Safer Internet Day, talk to your children about making friends with people they have never met in real life (IRL) online.

"Rachael has taken a significant step forward in addressing one of the most critical issues of our time: educating young people about the safe and responsible use of social media via workshops with Positive Social.

Recognising the growing challenges children face in the ever-evolving and often daunting online world, Rachael has diversified her work by delivering engaging and impactful social media workshops in schools. By combining her expertise with a warm, approachable delivery style, Rachael ensures that important safeguarding messages are understood and embraced by her young audience.

Having had the privilege of witnessing some of these workshops firsthand, I can attest to the positive impact Rachael is making. Her ability to connect with students, spark meaningful conversations, and inspire safer online behaviours is brilliant. In a digital age fraught with risks, Rachael’s work provides a lifeline for students, empowering them with the knowledge and tools to navigate social media responsibly."

A lot of discussion in schools & amongst parents following on from Channel 4 program Swiped: The School that Banned Phones last night.

A reminder about the funded workshops that I deliver for Positive Social. I've now delivered to over 1,000 young people and parents.

I'm going to share some of the comments and thoughts from those sessions over the next few weeks. In the meantime if you know of any school that would like to take advantage of the funded workshops, get in touch!
