This week we’re joined by BAFTA Cymru Winner to take a closer look at producing documentaries and everything that can entail! 😁

Plus a bonus session with on composing and choosing music for documentaries 🎬

Somehow it’s already week 4/4 for doc school! So after this one we’ll be sharing details of our special celebration event to complete the course 😌🙏

Alice Hughes is an award-winning producer whose films have screened at top festivals internationally, including SXSW, BFI London Film Festival, Sundance London, AFI Docs, and many more.

Her debut feature, Half Way, earned its director a BAFTA Breakthrough Brit award and was nominated for both a BIFA and a Grierson in 2017. Her second feature, Holloway, funded by BFI Doc Society, premiered in Competition at the 2024 BFI London Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award for Best Documentary.

Yasmine Latkowski is a composer and performer known for her enchanting compositions, blends diverse cultural influences into her music, creating meaningful connections across various platforms.

Yasmine’s contributions to the music industry have garnered widespread acclaim, including features on renowned platforms such as United Nations, BBC Africa Eye, BBC Panorama, and National Theatre Wales. She has also worked on immersive projects with National Theatre Wales and Creative Wales’ games community.

WYTHNOS 2 🎬 Interviews & Shooting with 😁

This week we had a great opportunity to hear from Leighton about his work and approach to shooting, before diving into some practical set ups for interviews 👀

In the afternoon we worked on questions and how to engage our interviewees before taking turns recording with each of them for our mini docs 🙏

What a week! We’re back again this Saturday to look at location shooting and editing 🫣

We’re delighted that Leighton will be leading the masterclass at this week’s Documentary School! We’ll be looking at approaches to shooting our films, starting with interviews 😌

Leighton Cox is a North Wales-based Emmy Award winning Director of Photography and Specialist Camera Operator.

Wythnos 1 @ 73 Doc School ✅🤝😍

A great start to the course in Wrexham with Karen Bird this Saturday 😁 We covered ideas, development and got to know each other. Then we had a nice heathy lunch from and then finished off with some pitches for the short docs we’ll be making 🔷

Can’t wait for this Saturday…special guest being announced tomorrow 🫣

Our Doc School kicks off tomorrow 😁❄️ and our first speaker is Karen Bird, looking at ideas and development!

Karen Bird has worked in film and television for over thirty years. Starting in the art department, she worked her way up to directing music videos and commercials in the 90s. More recently has been part of teams involved in projects such as the Peaky Blinders game. She works across scripted and factual and currently has a TV show in development with the BBC and a feature in development with Tip Top productions in LA. Throughout her career she has mentored trainees for the BBC and Chanel 4 and runs a BFI film Academy at Signal Film and Media, supporting young filmmakers into the industry. Karen’s passion is to help creatives, of all ages and backgrounds, to find their voices through filmmaking.

We’re launching a FREE Documentary School! 😁

The school will take place in Wrexham throughout January, running every Saturday on 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st January. Sign up: https://forms.gle/uUJ32xPaXGEmmFy79 🙏

Each Saturday will feature a masterclass led by a renowned figure from the documentary industry, giving participants the opportunity to learn from award-winning producers, directors, cinematographers and editors.

In addition to the masterclasses, students will have access to The Foundry on Yorke Street, where they can use professional equipment and edit suites to develop their ideas. Mentors will be on hand throughout the programme to guide participants through the filmmaking process.
