Hope everyone had a nice weekend. Did you work on any vehicles these last couple of days?

I've somehow bought this Vauxhall Corsa D Limited Edition from a neighbour. In late 2022 they bought it for their son to learn to drive. Except he hasn't bothered to learn, so the last MOT ran out in October 2024 and it has sat in the same place for about 1.5 years. I initially pumped up the tyres and got the engine running with a booster pack, but for £650 they said I could have it! Changed the oil/filter yesterday – old oil looked almost new. The Blue Print filter I considered newish as well. Air filter not that dirty and four spark plugs changed too. Front brakes taken apart, but need to lift the front more to get a breaker bar on the caliper carriers as they are tight. More to follow...

Day two of the Aygo engine swap. All running well. Big tapping noise we thought was from bottom end of engine was in fact a worn lower engine mount😃

Few other jobs to finish off next week.

Are you a roof box user? Ebay, who sell loads of them, found that 31% of motorists now use a roof box or cycle rack on their vehicles, but over half of them are not confident about installing them correctly. You risk a £2500 fine if they are improperly secured.

How many of have a roof box or cycle rack? Do you find them tricky to install? ^JB

The death of a legend:

The Honda Civic Type-R is being withdrawn from the UK & European market.

I have one coming on test soon and they are a truly great drivers car... One of my all time favourites.

Which hot hatch do you lust after current or historic and do you think we are going to miss this market sector?

Iconic Engines:

Which engines did you cut your teeth on when it came to learning about DIY motoring and what was your proudest moment?

For me? It has to be the Ford Cross flow or BL A series for sheer simplicity and weekend fettling joy.

The project MX-5 has recently come back from the MX5 Restorers who fitted a new clutch (easy) and removed as much rust from underneath with an air-powered needle scaler/descaler, hoping to not find too many holes, then cavity waxing, before adding large amounts of Dinitrol. Full story in the Oct/Nov25 issues.

What have you been working on this past week/weekend?

There are plenty of scam emails around at the moment. I've had one this morning from the 'DVLA'. Except it's not from the DVLA.

Always check the email address that the email has come from first. Usually not associated with the company they are representing. In this DVLA case, it has an email that looks official - [email protected] – but you can't fool me!

Tox Veramont in the subject line is one give-away. I've no idea either! Dear vehicle owner is another point towards a scam, plus there's no mention of the vehicle registration plate.

NEVER click on the link(s) provided.

Anyone else had similar emails?

In my (ahem) Humble opinion, I think EV cars are a blind alley. Hydrogen fuel cell cars are not far off being equal range-wise to typical ICE family motors and take the same time to fill up as fossil fuel vehicles. Regarding the carbon footprint to create hydrogen, you need to consider the HUGE amount of work and transportation logistics globally involved just to make the batteries for EVs. Not to mention the power stations working their guts out to provide the power.

What are your thoughts towards future motoring? Until the range and time to charge an EV is drastically reduced.... I'll be sticking to my petrol Grandland X and recently purchased SAAB TTiD Aero. But I would consider hydrogen.

What do you all think?
