The Thirsk Rotary Endeavour Award for a Carlton Miniott year 6 pupil was presented at The Leavers Assembly to George Dodd.

George’s name was added to the large commemorative shield and George received a personalized small shield and a £25 book token

The Head Teacher Mr. Steve Crocker who retired at the end of this academic year after 21 years service was himself presented with a Rotary Endeavour Award shield by Rotarian Andy Watson…

🐎 Thirsk Summer Cup Success Qualifies Big Leader for Big-Time

Big Leader justified being sent off the 6/4 favourite in the £15,000 William Hill Summer Cup, run over a distance of one mile at Thirsk last Saturday.

Racing prominently on the outer, Big Leader lived up to his name to cross the winning line a neck in front of his nearest rival, Treble Tee.

Jockey P.J. McDonald reported a quick pace in the race requiring Big Leader to tough it out.

Recording a third successive victory following previous wins at Redcar and Southwell, the three-year-old now qualifies for a £100,000 handicap race at York fourth Friday in August.

Big Leader’s trainer, Geoff Oldroyd, operates from his yard located in Yapham Mill, near Pocklington and has his string in good form at present.

Air Force One was successful at York and Project Geofin won at Pontefract earlier in the week.

Yorkshire based trainers landed seven out the eight races on the Thirsk card…

🏃🏃🏼‍♀️ Harriers Conquer Hills and Raise Over £2,000 for Charity

Last week the Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers held their annual Virtual Mountain Race which is organized by Head Coach Rob Burn in and around Kilburn Woods.

Over the four days that the virtual gates were open for racers, 83 runners completed the course, with a few even running it twice in support of others!

Team Norway took the win, with a total elapsed time of 6:42:09 for six team members to complete the 6.3 mile course covering 1,200 feet of climbing – captained by Pete Jackson, the team members were Paul Peacock, Paul Chapman, Brett Edgeworth, Natalie Lyth and guest runner Mandy Almack. Team Slovakia, captained by Sara Armitage came in second, and Team Italy, captained by Alex Miller came third.

In the individual prizes, Luke McNiff took first place in 46:09 followed by Andrew Price in 48:10 and Tom Levi in 48:13. For the women, Liv Mulligan took first place in 54:27, followed by Club Chair Trudy Morrice in 58:36 and Rose Kruger in 1:03:27…

When Kevin Hollinrake achieved his dream in 2015 of becoming the MP for Thirsk and Malton as successor to Anne Macintosh, he could not have imagined that 10 years later he would become Chairman of the Conservative Party, but that is what has happened as part of the summer reshuffle by Party leader Kemi Badenoch.

This is the latest step in the busy political career of a man who once described himself to me as “a very normal person”.

When I spoke to him after has was first selected as the parliamentary candidate he described being brought up in Easingwold in a family where it was very community focused.

🐎 Thirsk Racecourse Supports Injured Jockey’s Charity with Unique Race

Horse racing supports a range of charities and Thirsk Racecourse contributed to donations via the Graham Lee Injured Jockeys Fund Stable Staff Stakes.

The hands and heels race attracted a field of 11 staff from racing yards at the meeting on 25 July.

All participants had undertaken to a sponsorship obligation of £500 and Lee was in attendance at the meeting.
