⛪️ It Started as a Religious Chapel; Now It Is a Very Different Chamber!

There are times when one needs a Professor of History to really explain a very complex subject. We were very lucky in November to welcome Dr John Cooper to our Forest of Galtres Society meeting and his presentation was such an excellent story – and particularly relevant when the chamber has been very much in the news subsequently! What we heard about is the House of Commons. What we did not know was its former life and Dr Cooper, Professor of History at the University of York, explained that to us so well.

There has been a Budget speech there in November. There are debates there, and it is very hard to understand why parliamentary debates occur in this particular building.

Wenceslaus Hollar’s engraving entitled ‘Civitatis Westmonasteriensis pars’; ‘Part of the City of Westminster’, is an image I would love you to be able to see! But I cannot share it. Do look it up for yourselves…

⚽️ Thirsk Falcons Match Report from Facebook

**Thirsk Falcons U14 Clarets vs Billingham Town**

Result: Win 2–1 (Sam, Jack C [pen]).

Football came out on top in a physical battle. Both teams started brightly, making for an entertaining opening spell. Falcons’ trademark pass- and-move football frustrated the visitors, who struggled to create any meaningful chances.

The game became increasingly niggly, with some of the darker arts creeping in-off-the-ball incidents and studs-up challenges threatened to spoil the contest. Falcons maintained composure, rose above it, and refused to stoop to that level.

Falcons took a deserved lead when Sam finished with real quality after a pinpoint pass from Doddy. Soon after, Jack C was bundled over in the box and calmly dispatched the resulting penalty into the top corner…

💼 MP Calls for Rethink on Business Rates Changes Impacting Racing Yards

I have written to the Chancellor alongside parliamentary colleagues, Nick Timothy MP and Lee Dillon MP, to raise serious concerns about planned changes to the Business Rates system that will disproportionately impact racehorse training yards.

Racing is a vital industry in Thirsk and Malton, supporting jobs, local businesses and the wider rural economy. New Treasury guidance would exclude training yards from Retail, Hospitality and Leisure (RHL) relief, leading to significant increases in business rates for many yards over the coming years.

This decision risks placing unsustainable pressure on businesses that are already facing rising costs. I see first-hand the importance of racing to our local communities, and there is no convincing justification for singling out training yards when other comparable sporting and leisure facilities continue to receive support…

🎁 Talking Thirsk with Chris Purser - Bearing Gifts

We have just received parcels sent from a relative of my partner’s, sent from a well known grocers to the upper crust. Three of them came, containing a sturdy wicker hamper with a promise of “cheese and biscuits”.

We were bemused, when the biscuits were there, with a small jar of “Fig Cheese”, some sort of chutney.

By a later delivery, two more stout boxes appeared.

They contained wrapped in a wool blanket, (which we used to stuff a cushion!) several frozen ice-packs, and a small box of “British Brie Cheese”, the other one, identically packed, revealed a tiny log of Goat’s Cheese, just small enough to fit into a top outside pocket…

📰 The Thirsk Weekly News Part of a TV Christmas Special

On Thursday night 18th December our sister title “The Thirsk Weekly News” made it’s TV debut on the opening scenes of Channel 5’s “Christmas with the Greens: A Yorkshire Vet Special”.

I am sure it will be on again over Christmas and available on demand.

Jeannie Green and her husband Steve (star draws of the Yorkshire Vet series) bring back the Christmas Spirit to Vet Peter Wright via a number of people around Thirsk.

My wife Fiona spotted many people she knew from the Thirsk area, an easy hour’s entertaining watch.

The reason the paper was part of the programme was that a member of the Production team at Daisy Becks Studios (Leeds) contacted ourselves to see if they could use our paper to set the scene for this special…
