🥰 Hambleton Grange Hosts Heartwarming Harvest Festival in Thirsk

HC-One’s Hambleton Grange Care Home in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, welcomed residents, families, friends, and members of the local community to its annual Harvest Festival celebration.

The event was filled with warmth, community spirit, and generosity. A wonderful collection of non- perishable food items was kindly donated by colleagues, relatives, and local community members. These donations were beautifully displayed at St Mary’s Church for their Harvest Service before being passed on to Thirsk Food Bank and Community Works, ensuring they reach those most in need across the community.

During the Harvest Service, residents, families, and friends gathered together to celebrate the season. Many enjoyed the opportunity to take Holy Communion, and the atmosphere was made even more special by the presence of loved ones filling the room…

🙌 Business Launch

17-year-old Yorkshire amateur boxer (Big Framer) launched a mobile petting farm to serve local community.

Harley Lovell & his 4 sisters launched their business, Brookefields mobile petting farm on the 28th of September 2025, with a grand opening with lots of people in attendance, at a village near Thirsk.

The business idea, Harley & his sisters have had for several years, & with determination have now launched the business successfully.

The business was officially launched & endorsed, by not only their lifelong friends, but Britain’s oldest working farmers, as seen on televisions “the Yorkshire vet”, Mr & Mrs Green.

Harley’s speech at the ribbon, with his 2 sisters holding either end.

Harley’s speech:

“Thank you all for coming today, I appreciate everybody that’s turned out to help us celebrate the opening of our business, Brookefields mobile petting farm…

🎥 Paris 75 - Ritz Cinema Thirsk

Leeds United fans (particularly, but not exclusively) will be excited to hear that Thirsk’s entirely volunteer-run cinema will be showing the documentary film PARIS 75 on the evening of the second Sunday in October.

The film is about Leeds United’s European Cup Final appearance against Bayern Munich in 1975 but also, much more. The film focuses on the game itself, the fans who were there, and the lasting impact of the event on Leeds United’s identity.

Directed by Harvey Marcus and produced by Bruise Film, it explores the story of the match and the impact it had on Leeds United fans.

PARIS 75 - The European Cup Final Football Tried To Forget. Fifty years on, at each and every game, Leeds United fans still sing the same refrain, ‘We Are The Champions, Champions Of Europe’.

This feature takes a unique look at a season and, ultimately, a match steeped in controversy and myth which defined the identity of a club, its supporters and arguably, a city which endures to this day; bringing to a crashing end an era in football never witnessed before or since…

🌸 Blooming Good…

Something that helps make Thirsk outstanding as a place to live or visit is the wealth of colour and shape in the flower displays in and around the town centre.

This is the work over many years of Thirsk in Bloom, now under the aegis of Thirsk Rotary Club and expanded to include Sowerby.

This year the “Bloomers” entered in the Towns and Parishes category of the Yorkshire in Bloom Awards. The 2025 award ceremony has just taken place at Tadcaster.

The judges assessed entries based on Royal Horticultural Society standards of planting impact, environmental responsibility and community participation.

The awards take the form of between one and five “Golden Roses”…

🤩 Herriot Hospice collect a cheque with Julian Norton, TV

On Thursday morning, Julian Norton stepped out of his popular and very busy veterinary practice in Thirsk to hand over a cheque for £475 collected by Thalasgair Labradors from Sessay who had organized their annual and well attended fun dog show at Thirsk Auction Mart in aid of Thirsk’s Herriot Hospice and St. Michael’s Hospice back in June.

Sandra Gilbert gratefully received the cheque on the charity’s behalf. Every penny counts towards the two hospice establishments for equipment, staff and support for bereavement and end of life care in this area and in Harrogate.

Thirsk’s Lambert now refurbished and converted building is soon to be given its legal status to open its doors at last fully for care, counselling and support in the community…

🏃🏃🏼‍♀️ Harriers Recognized at Regional Volunteer Awards

Friday evening saw the Thirsk and Sowery Harriers celebrated at the Yorkshire and Humberside Regional Volunteer Awards, which is organized by England Athletics.

This was a great opportunity to recognize all the hard work put in by the Harriers committee, led by Trudy Morrice, all the coaches, and many other members who volunteer their time.

The club were awarded runner up prizes for Club of the Year and Community Project of the Year. In particular, efforts to welcome new members to the club, provide excellent coaching, a great member experience and the behind the scenes work on running were noted, and the Community Project award reflected the Harrier’s Beginners to 5K group, contributions to charity, and community involvement (wheelchair race, fun runs, charity donations, support of scouts and local schools, food bank donations, litter picking and bulb planting are a few of the examples)…

🚴Local Cyclist Takes on Epic Ride for Diabetes UK

A storm might have got in the way of Ian Smith’s epic fundraising cycle ride, but he still managed to pedal some 750km (466 miles) in aid of Diabetes UK.

Ian’s original aim was to do the full London – Edinburgh – London ride which sees cyclists from around the world cycle more than 1,500 km (932 miles) in five days. But the wind and rain of Storm Floris intervened, as gusts of up to 100 mph convinced organizers to cut this year’s event short.

Ian, who lives with type 1 diabetes, was already well into his journey along with 2,000 other cyclists when the ride was called off.

“By that time, I’d already cycled 375 km (233 miles) from London and had made it to the checkpoint in Malton in North Yorkshire,” Ian explained.

He was very close to his home in Thirsk, but didn’t want to risk riding home in poor conditions, late in the day…
