Earlier in the month, Film and Television Production students visited ITV Yorkshire, where they toured the Emmerdale sets and other parts of the studios. It was a great day out, giving students the chance to speak with some of the incredibly helpful ITV staff and to see just how closely the technologies used at ITV align with those on our BSc Film and Television Production programmes!

The trip was organised by Matt Brannan (Head of Film & TV) working closely with ITV Academy's Bethan Wilkin and Allison Piggott who were incredibly helpful in supporting the day - thanks to them!

⏮️🎭 Political Theatre Throwback!

Congratulations to our second year Theatre: Writing, Directing and Performance students who completed their Political Theatre Performance Project last month!

The students performed three 30 minute performances exploring the theme of ‘hope’ through a political lense.

This module considers different ways of approaching ‘the political’ on the stage and offers students the opportunity to craft their own productions, usually on a specific political issue or theme.

If you are like us we are still singing the lyrics to the adapted songs for Bioscience: The Musical! 🎵 Thank you to everyone who came to watch the performance. We hope you were entertained, but also educated in the research that is happening in the Biology department and Hull York Medical School. As the project was a pilot run, we hope to adapt the concept for other areas of research from the uniofyork, and watch this space - Bioscience The Musical! may be back soon!

Thank you to the cast + crew: Ellen Julian-Page, Alex Lees, Sid Wood, Emily Wilson, Skye Pickford, Dylan Day, Jack Stuart, Ines Hahn, Emily Holmes, Arlo Haigh, Ciara Loughrey and Emma Boneham.

🎬 University of York alumnus recognised for key role in Oscar-winning production

University of York's Film and Television Production graduate Máté Ternyik — colourist on The Brutalist, winner of Best Cinematography at The Academy — returned to campus this May to speak with current students.

In a Q&A, Máté shared insights into his role in post-production, the creative process behind The Brutalist, and his journey from York to international recognition.

Matt Brannan, Head of Film and Television at York, praised the alumnus’s achievement:

“We are delighted to hear of Máté’s success. He was always such a talented creative and technical student, with meticulous attention to detail and a strong work ethic. It’s wonderful to see how his dedication has paid off so early in his career. I predict this to be the first of many successes for him in what I’m sure will be a long and distinguished journey in the industry and we’re all really proud to have been able to play some part in his early development at York.”

An inspiring and valuable session that highlighted the career pathways open to our students — and the power of storytelling behind the scenes.

🚀 Earlier in the month, students on the Digital Life and Objects module of UoY’s MA in Digital Media Culture captured live satellite images 🛰️ from NOAA 18/19 during a workshop led by Dr Richard Carter.

Each session involved using simple equipment to receive radio transmissions 📡 from an orbiting weather satellite as it passed from horizon to horizon. The satellite (NOAA 18 or 19, in this case) gradually builds a picture of the weather below and transmits a signal that can be decoded on the ground. Students heard this transmission as a distinct "ringing" noise, which was recorded and transformed into a surprisingly clear image of Earth’s surface—from Greenland and Iceland to Europe and North Africa.

Beyond being a lot of fun, the workshop gave students hands-on insight into some of the technologies behind our networked world, including satellites, radios, and signal processing software.

🌎The images produced have been submitted to the Year of Weather research project, which invites participants worldwide to share their own satellite recordings throughout 2025—building a global, volunteer-driven picture of our changing weather: https://open-weather.community/year-of-weather/
