We first used York Publishing Services in early 2026 for the publication of a book related to a public lecture which forms part of Woodbrooke’s work. We are a small charity, without a dedicated publications staff and so used the full service provided by YPS - copy editing, proof reading, design (including cover design) and print.

Cathi and Clare were both really helpful, explaining the options and timescales and answering queries quickly and clearly. The process of sending page proofs and a proof copy of the publication worked very smoothly too with YPS dealing quickly with amendments and edits.

It was both cheaper and a smoother process than our previous experiences of small scale publishing. Ours was a time sensitive project, requiring completion and delivery by a particular date – which YPS met with room to spare! This was crucial for us in being able to have the book on sale at the time of the lecture event. Initial sales went better than expected and so we had to do a reprint for which they were really responsive and helpful on that too.

We were so pleased with the service that we’re using YPS for another project with a related publication.

URGENT SCAM WARNING ⚠️

- Author, Mark Harland

Six weeks ago I was flattered to receive an email from a lady in New York - Vicki Lame.

She told me that she had read and was very impressed by the third book in my Scarbados Trilogy – the New Hotel Scarbados.

“Vicki” went into some detail about how and why she was impressed. She told me that her company – St. Martin's Publishing Group – was the New York Division of Macmillans (and who hasn't heard of them?) and interested in publishing the books and any subsequent follow-on books. Googling Vicki Lame revealed her to be a senior person at St. Martins.

“Vicki” asked me for the name of my Agent with whom she would communicate direct. When I responded to tell her that I didn't yet have one she said that she could recommend one and gave me her name – Sharlene Martin – together with her email address which appeared genuine. Googling Sharlene Martin also revealed her to be a highly successful and prominent New York based literary agent of many years standing.

Correspondence was exchanged with Sharlene over two or three weeks and included things such as plans for the future, details of radio interviews etc. There was nothing to suggest that anything was wrong – quite the contrary.

However, things started to go awry when she asked me to compose no less than three 'Query letters' for submission to potential publishers. I queried what that was for. Is that not the Agent's job, I wondered? She asked me to attempt the task and I emailed her my efforts. Two days later she told me they were not up to the standard required in the world of US publishers and she recommended a professional – Faith Beauty – who was extremely experienced in this field. I made contact via the email address that “Sharlene” provided.

Several days later I received a long email from “Faith” explaining how she could construct all three in a package priced at $4.200! Payment via credit card would be offered to keep in simple!

I requested forty-eight hours to think about it. Needless to say I subsequently declined.

Laughably, I was then offered a 50% discount as it was her birthday in two days time and would celebrate with her clients.

This whole escapade could have been financially disastrous but there are several points to consider:

1. Vicki Lame – or the person purporting to be her – had almost certainly used AI to acquire a short but informative synopsis of my book in order to give the impression she had read it thoroughly.
2. The offer of a credit card to settle an invoice would only have been the start. Had I accepted the offer I would have insisted on a bank to bank transfer.
3. Looking at the timing of the later emails it was obvious to me that emails did NOT originate in New York which is five hours behind UK time. I'm guessing the sender is one or two hours ahead – possibly Nigeria/ Ghana time.
4. In all probability Vicki Lame, Sharlene Martin and Faith Beauty are one and the same person – i.e. the SCAMMER.

'A heartfelt thank you to York publishing services , especially Cathy, Clare and Paula, for their outstanding support, patience and guidance throughout my publishing journey. As a first-time author with very little technical knowledge. I found the process quite daunting at first, but their expertise, encouragement, and willingness to help made the learning curve so much easier to navigate.' Rebecca Barnes

Thank you, Rebecca
