The Rescue of Grenada Cricket!
The Grenada Cricket Association (GCA) is experiencing a revitalization under its new leadership, marking a significant turnaround in the island’s cricket landscape. Since the recent change in presidency, the association has made remarkable strides in governance, community engagement, and cricket development, promising a brighter future for Grenadian cricket.
The recent election brought fresh leadership committed to transparency, accountability, and inclusivity. Contrary to claims of a rigged election process by the outgoing president, the election was fairly contested and resulted in a leadership change that has energized the sport locally. Within just six months, the new team has revived club cricket and expanded opportunities for players across all age groups. Notable events hosted include Under-19 tournaments, T20 and T10 competitions, the Windward Islands Under-19 Tournament, and the fielding of a team to the Windward Islands Women’s Tournament held in Dominica. Additionally, the popular "Five for Fun Program, in partnership with the West Indies Cricket Programme, is set to launch next week.
The transformation we’ve seen in Grenada cricket is a testament to the dedication and transparency of the new executive. Their focus on good governance, honest leadership, and community involvement is helping to rebuild trust and generate real progress. They have secured over 21 sponsors, including a title sponsor committed to youth tournaments for the next three years, and are actively working to enhance women’s cricket development.
The GCA has introduced annual financial reporting and regular meetings to ensure collective decision-making and accountability. Furthermore, monetary support has been distributed to parish clubs to encourage wider participation in tournaments—a move previously overlooked under former leadership. However, since the recent election, one parish on the Western-side has not participated in council meetings, leaving some fans and players without representation.
Looking ahead, Grenada will play a key role in the upcoming Test match between the West Indies and Australia, signalling the island’s growing prominence in the cricket community.
With a clear vision and strong leadership, the Grenada Cricket Association is steering the sport towards a promising future, ensuring that cricket in Grenada is truly in safe hands.
