During our interview, Mr. Henry Steill took us on a brief journey through his life in education from attending the Harvey Vale Government School, to transferring to the Lesterre Rosary School in 1955, the same year Hurricane Janet struck, and later beginning his teaching career before eventually becoming a principal at Six Roads School.

The full documentary is quite an interesting journey down memory lane, as he also shares stories of growing up in the village of Lesterre, its culture and traditions, and some of the villagers he remembers who contributed to the community over the years.

When we speak about traditional boatbuilding in Carriacou, the village of Windward often comes to mind. But boats also has deep roots in other communities, including L’Esterre.

In this video from our recent interview with Mr. Henry Steele, a former principal, he recalls some of the vessels built in L’Esterre where he grew up including Starlight, Trader’s Choice and Sea Fortress, along with several smaller boats.

These vessels became were used to transport goods between Carriacou, Grenada and other islands throughout the region.

Mr. Steill also shares a personal connection to that history his father was a shipwright who built Starlight and Trader’s Choice and as he recalls, may also have worked on Sea Fortress.

Another piece of L’Esterre’s history worth documenting and preserving.

On a recent trip to Bequia, organized by Mr. Andre Drewer, we had the opportunity to meet one of his relatives, Mr. Jarson Hazel, a local boatbuilder who built Blackberry and other traditional boats that compete in regattas in Grenadines including Bequia, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

Here is a short conversation we had with him highlighting the boatbuilding tradition and the maritime connection that continues to link our Grenadine islands.
