A worthy contender for a new P.O.I. as team wasn’t able to continue on our convoy to this destination.

So.. was it worth the trouble? Yes! Hasankeyf is an ancient town surrounded by mountains which is located along the Tigris River in the Batman Province in southeastern Turkey. It was declared a natural conservation area by Turkey in 1981. Despite local and international objections, the city and its archaeological sites will be flooded as part of the Ilısu Dam project. So who knows what will this beautiful site will look like in a few years, really worth considering ..

finally made it into Turkey. After a first unsuccessful attempt. We decided it was either go hard or go home. With some help from friends (and maybe some clever documentation-forgery) we were able to convince the border-control to let us in.

The Buzludzha Monument was built on a peak by the Bulgarian communist regime to commemorate the events of 1891, when the socialists led by Dimitar Blagoev assembled secretly in the area to form an organized socialist movement with the founding of the Bulgarian Social Democratic Party, a forerunner of the Bulgarian Communist Party. The monument opened in 1981. No longer maintained by the Bulgarian government, it has fallen into disuse.

Now the monument is abandoned and vandalised, a perfect spot for photography.

👋 As week 1 comes to a close we say an emotional goodbye to our teammate Michaël, who sustained an injury and can’t continue the trip. It’s safe to say that the will feel less idiotic without you (or maybe more?..who’s to say?)
As we enter Turkey, the team also reaches an important milestone, we finally reached the continent of Asia. 🌏Safe travels back home buddy, you are with us in spirit ♥️
