The Artist’s Portrait in Times of Authoritarianism: How Do We Continue Our Resistance?

On December 3rd at 16:00, the Georgian Film Institute, within the framework of the Tbilisi International Film Festival, presents a series of short talks — “The Artist’s Portrait in Times of Authoritarianism: How Do We Continue Our Resistance?”

Directors, producers, writers, and actors will speak about their personal experiences and share their individual paths in resisting totalitarianism.

What happens when a human life loses its value in the eyes of the state?
How can an artist continue to exist — to create, to live — when their colleague has been illegally imprisoned by the regime?

The focus of this selection of international or world premieres is on films with a more daring form, where makers approach reality from a different angle and seek out the furthest boundaries of documentary art.

►Every year, IDFA invites a distinguished group of filmmakers, artists, and industry experts to highlight the very best in documentary storytelling. The winners will be revealed at the Awards Ceremony on Thursday, November 20.

Update for our international followers: this is to share the news that documentary filmmaker Giorgi Mrevlishvili has been released after 7 days of imprisonment.

Giorgi Mrevlishvili was arrested for blocking Tbilisi's Rustaveli Avenue as part of a demonstration.

Since late October, dozens of civilians in Tbilisi have been imprisoned for “blocking the road”, with sentences ranging from 1 to 14 days of confinement. Some have faced high fines. Those charged include students, teachers, artists, doctors, lawyers and others ranging in age from 18 to 75. If they are arrested again for “blocking the road,” they may face one year in prison.

Since last year, when the government openly turned away from Georgia’s European path, daily demonstrations have taken place. Since then, on politically motivated charges, over 100 citizens have been or are awaiting to be sentenced to years in prison.

We are greatful to the international documentary filmmaking community for the solidarity and support expressed these days!

✧ Jihlava Film Festival’s New Visions Award was granted to the project Adam’s Tooth.

Adam’s Tooth received the award in the category of the Most Promising European Project. The prize includes an in-kind support equalling a total of 20,000 EUR for post-production.

📄 Jury statement: So many of us in different countries are experiencing absurd and cruel political systems infringing on individual liberties and our most basic human rights. With a cinematic lens and a wry humorous tone, this film is emblematic of a “creative resistance” to the institutional injustice of the Georgian nightmare. The Jury is honored to present the New Visions Award for most promising European Project, in cooperation with UPP, to Mariam Chachia, Nik Voigt, and Tekla Machavariani of Adam’s Tooth.

Solidarity with his family, who today witnessed Giorgi’s arrest. We consider it unacceptable for Giorgi to be imprisoned not only for 7 days, but even for 7 minutes, because Giorgi is an honest and innocent person!
We will not tolerate these repressions. The illegal detention of our colleagues — as well as of any other people fighting for Georgia’s future — only strengthens our resolve to stand firmly against injustice until the very end!

🔴 დოკუმენტური კინოს ასოციაცია შეშფოთებას გამოვთქვამთ ჩვენი კოლეგის გიორგი მრევლიშვილის მოულოდნელი დაკავების გამო.

გიორგისა და მის მეუღლეს დღეს, 30 ოქტომბერს, შვილი ექიმთან მიჰყავდათ, როდესაც ის პოლიციელებმა მანქანიდან გადაიყვანეს.

სასამართლომ მას დღესვე 7 დღიანი ადმინისტრაციული პატიმრობა შეუფარდა. მისი ბრალეულობა რუსთაველის გამზირის გადაკეტვაა.

მას შემდეგ, რაც გასულ წელს ხელისუფლებამ გაცხადებულად ზურგი აქცია საქართველოს ევროპულ კურსს, რუსთაველის გამზირზე ყოველ დღე იმართება დემონსტრაცია და პროტესტის გამოხატვის მიზნით იკეტება გზა.

გიორგი ავტორია ფილმებისა “ეროვნული გამოცდები”, “12 გაკვეთილი”, “ზურაბი” და სხვა. გიორგი ასევე აღბეჭდავდა საპროტესტო აქციებს.

🔴 Documentary Association Georgia expresses deep concern regarding the unexpected detention of our colleague, Giorgi Mrevlishvili.

Today, October 30, Giorgi and his wife were taking their child to a doctor when police officers took him out of his car.

Giorgi Mrevlishvili has been detained under administrative charges, for blocking Rustaveli Avenue — an action that, under the new law, can result in several days of imprisonment. Soon after detention he was sentenced to 7 days of imprisonment.

Since last year, when the government openly turned away from Georgia’s European course, daily demonstrations have taken place on Rustaveli Avenue, during which the road is often blocked as an act of protest.

Giorgi is the director of the documentaries National Exams, 12 Lessons, Zurabi, and others. Recently, he has been documenting the demonstrations.

Anyone who has ever met Giorgi knows it is impossible to see him as a criminal. He is one of the most gentle and peaceful filmmakers in documentary film industry in Georgia.

Documentary Association Georgia - DOCA demands the immediate release of Giorgi Mrevlishvili and expresses full solidarity with him.

‼️ Statement of the Georgian Film Institute

Yesterday, on September 9, TV channel Imedi disseminated a photograph of our colleague, a member of the Executive Board of the Georgian Film Institute, Levan Abdushelishvili. They spread lies and falsely accused him of the violent actions that were in fact carried out by the so-called “titushkas” — hired thugs gathered at Kakha Kaladze’s headquarters.

We strongly condemn and protest against this outrageous and shameless lie! Today, representatives of Rustavi 2 TV channel already showed up at Levan’s home, presumably in an attempt to amplify Imedi TV’s propagandistic and discriminatory narrative.

Shortly thereafter, through Facebook trolls, the home address of Levan Abdushelishvili was made public, along with the addresses of other activists. Combined with Imedi TV’s falsehoods, this creates a real danger for these individuals and serves as a direct incitement to violence.

We address the journalists of Imedi and Rustavi 2:

You are serving a violent regime, spreading false information, fueling confrontation among citizens; for years you have been spreading anti-propaganda against Georgia’s pro-European choice, encouraging violence, and endangering innocent citizens. Let us remind you that Levan Abdushelishvili is a film critic, journalist, host of numerous television programs, and participant and organizer of many important cultural events in Georgia.

Through your dishonest work, you are endangering innocent people, your own colleagues, and the honest citizens who are fighting for Georgia’s pro-European future.

We appeal to each individual working at these channels, regardless of whether you are producing political or entertainment content: in the case of any attack against our colleagues or any citizen, every person employed at these channels will bear responsibility.

We warn you: we will ensure that every cultural organization across Europe is informed of your dishonest activities. Immediately stop collaborating with the Russian regime and distance yourselves from evil and crime.
