Georgia’s acclaimed mezzo-soprano Nino Surguladze is set to grace prestigious stages in Belgium, Italy, Spain and Georgia in the coming months, captivating audiences with her powerful vocals and dramatic flair, as revealed in her exclusive interview with Glamour Magazine.
Surguladze is known as one of Georgia's internationally recognised opera singers who has performed various dream roles with the biggest stars of the international opera scene. She has taken part in famous global festivals and graced the stages of the world's foremost opera houses, including over 100 shows at La Scala.
The mezzo-soprano has received numerous awards, including a top international award regarded as the 'Oscar of Opera'.
Since 2014, Surguladze has been leading the Natvris Khe charity foundation, which has saved the lives of hundreds of children. The foundation's charity concerts in Georgia have seen honored guests such as Sophia Loren, Carlo Ponti, Carmen Giannatazio, Daniela Dess, Barbara Frittoli, and others.
Q. Nino, please tell us about the new roles that you are currently working on and upcoming concerts.
A. I recently performed in Belgium with Jezibaba in Dvorak's opera Rusalka and will be returning to the same theater to perform in the amazing and complex opera Katya Kabanova by the composer Leoš Janáček.
Currently, I am in Sicily where we are preparing for the world premiere of two operas, where I will play two completely different characters. Both require powerful vocals and strong dramatic acting, and the premiere is notable for being staged by the fantastic Italian director Davide Livermore.
One of the operas is called La Lupa, which was originally performed by Anna Magnani. After her performance, it has become a difficult challenge for me to present my own version of this role.
The second opera is a tragicomedy, and the responsibility and honor of its first performance fell to me and my colleagues. The performance will be conducted by the Italian maestro with great experience, Fabrizio Carminati, who is the musical director of the Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania, Sicily.
After Sicily, I will be performing in Madrid, and in the spring, I am excited to sing for my beloved Georgians in Tbilisi.
Q. In order to achieve worldwide fame from a small country like Georgia, what qualities besides talent are necessary?
A. It's a difficult question to answer. I don't have an exact recipe for success. I believe that personal growth is a daily process and one should never think that they have achieved everything, even if they have a long list of accomplishments. I feel fortunate, and I think it's because I always carry love, Georgia, and poetry in my heart. The rest requires constant effort and dedication towards your work.
I never give up, I always get back up and continue to chase my dreams alongside those I love. My journey may not have had a clear destination, but I remained persistent and everything happened gradually.
I put a lot of love and hard work into every role I play. Memories of beautiful moments connect me with all of my past performances. As a singer, I believe that we can convey the full spectrum of human emotions - from pain to joy and everything in between - which allows us to create truly powerful and moving performances.
Q. You are a successful woman who has introduced Georgia to the world. Have you considered the impact of you as an artist on the entire country?
A. Of course I understand that due to my work abroad I am often in the spotlight and have the potential to showcase our country in the best possible light. This responsibility is not a burden as Georgia is truly an extraordinary country. We must strive to send positive messages that benefit our country. In fact, I believe that all Georgians have a role to play in promoting our country to the world.
