💦🦠 Did you know? Sweating more doesn't necessarily mean smelling worse. In fact, fresh sweat is almost completely odorless—it's the bacteria living on your skin that create the smell most people associate with body odor.
Your body has two main types of sweat glands. Eccrine glands, found across most of your body, produce mostly water and electrolytes to help cool you down during exercise or hot weather. Apocrine glands, located mainly in the armpits and groin, release a thicker fluid containing proteins and fats. On its own, this sweat has very little smell. The odor develops only after naturally occurring skin bacteria break these compounds down into small, volatile molecules that produce the familiar scent of body odor.
Research published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology and Nature Reviews Microbiology has shown that specific bacteria—particularly species of Corynebacterium and Staphylococcus—are largely responsible for producing body odor. This is why two people can sweat the same amount, or even why one person can sweat much more than another yet have very little odor. Genetics, your unique skin microbiome, hygiene habits, hormones, clothing, and even diet all influence how much body odor develops.
This also explains why most deodorants focus on reducing odor-causing bacteria, while antiperspirants work differently by reducing the amount of sweat that reaches the skin's surface. Together, they target different parts of the process.
💡 Try this: If body odor is your main concern, focus on washing areas like the armpits with soap, wearing clean, breathable clothing, and using a deodorant if needed. Controlling the bacteria—not just the sweat—is often the key to smelling fresh.
