NHIA Cedes 13 Staff Permanently to Support Ghana Medical Trust Fund

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has officially released thirteen members of its staff to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) also known as Mahama Cares, following a year-long secondment during which they helped establish and operationalise the Fund.
The officers were among the first group of professionals deployed to support the Mahama Cares when it was launched.
Over the past year, they worked closely with the Fund's leadership and stakeholders, contributing to the development of its systems, structures, and day-to-day operations.

Their permanent transition marks an important milestone for both institutions and reflects the confidence placed in their expertise and dedication.
Commenting on the decision to release the staff of GMTF, the Chief Executive of NHIA, Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, thanked the staff for their invaluable contribution and wished them well in the next chapter of their professional journey.

"When the Ghana Medical Trust Fund was established, these officers answered the call to serve. They left familiar roles within the NHIA and took on the task of helping build a new institution from the ground up. Today, as they officially join the Fund, we celebrate their courage, commitment and the impact they have made."
He said while the Authority would miss their services, it was proud to see them continue to contribute to a cause that aligns closely with the country's efforts to improve access to healthcare.

"The work of strengthening Ghana's health system requires collaboration and shared purpose. Although they will now wear different badges, they remain part of a broader family working to improve the lives of Ghanaians. We are proud of them and grateful for their service," he said.
On behalf of the Authority, Dr. Bampoe expressed appreciation to the officers for their dedication to the NHIA and assured them of the Authority's continued support as they take on their new responsibilities at the Ghana Medical Trust Fund.

South Africa has formally asked Nigeria, Malawi, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique to reimburse part of the costs it incurred while repatriating their nationals. In a briefing to Parliament, the Home Affairs Department said it had spent nearly $18 million on housing and transporting migrants who requested to return home. According to reports from the Associated Press, the steep bill covered bus transport, temporary repatriation facilities, staff overtime, food and other operational expenses. Home Affairs Director-General Tommy Makhode noted that although the affected countries assisted in some aspects of the repatriation process, South Africa ultimately shouldered the bulk of the financial burden, prompting the government's latest move to seek cost recovery.
